I have the shade cloth type guard on my camper as well as a window protector on my back window, you should have both in my opinion.
Here's a great tutorial on making one.
Rear Window Guard
Baz.
I am looking for some advice from the Camper Trailer/Caravan towing fraternity.
My wife and I are not new to the four wheel driving scene but have now decided to create a camper trailer and need some help on the stone guard design.
We see some trailers/vans with a shade cloth type covering on a forward sloping frame on the drawbar. Other rigs have mudflaps that cover the entire width of the four wheel drive.
Which is the better system and why?? Or is there something else to protect that rear window that we have not yet seen??
Any other technical help would be appreciated too.

How ugly are those full width flaps!!
at least with the shade screen when you unhitch, the screen stays with the camper!

you will still have stones coming through under the mud flap, and remember that the stones are thrown in every direction and gain at lot of velocity - some will bounce up off the road surface even after making it under the flap. At speed the mudflap will swing back and up (air flow under the car) a long way allowing more through. Yeh the full width rubber flap will stop a lot - they are good on the beach under 60km for eg... but not as much as well designed trailer mount system.

I've got a camper with the stone deflector but also made up my own rear window saver for the Defender.
Bought some 3mm perspex, cut it to shape of the 3 windows and then stuck some velcro on it and the windows.
Probably cost about 30 bucks all up and an hour or so in time. Gets dusty but haven't had any broken windows and who needs a clean rear window anyway? Use the mirrors.
Alan.
I appreciate your replies guys...............thanks for that!!
I guess the guard on the trailer wins............![]()
Also.....I do like the the perspex on the window![]()
The perspex cover on the rear window is a "must have" before my next trip.
While towing my caravan on one of the Developmental roads in Qld, Nov last, I pulled over and stopped to allow two roadtrains (coming from the other direction) past. After they had gone, I started to move off (still in 1st gear) when my rear window shattered.
I returned to Charters Towers ( as they had drier weather forecast than the Atherton Tableland). It took some days for the replacement window to arrive & be fitted.
I never made it to the Atherton Tablelands as the wet was on its way.
I perspex cover would have saved a lot of aggravation.
