thats a good pic, we get that here too, trust me stockton sees alot of people stuck, but you can see he is on a cross slope and tried to reverse his back end around and up the slope, that would never work with full pressure, i guess the difference between that and me on road pressures is big tyres and knowing where to drive.
hahahahah for sure, especially toyota drivers... if only my 2nd car wasnt a prado
the funniest part is pulling up and watching the toyota drive dig...... when its your wife![]()
My owners handbook says for soft sand to engage CDL and use the low range box as this will allow you to accelerate easier. I usually use 3L.
I always do as I'm told and it's worked so far

I always lock the CDL when properly off road, (I'm not counting gravel roads here), unless there is a lot of cap rock.
A Land Rover specialist mechanic explained to me once that if you have the CDL unlocked and spin one wheel only at high rpms you can centrifuge all the oil out of the center diff, this results in high rates of wear on the copper and fibre shims behind the "sun" and "planet" gears in the center diff to a point where they dissapear completly. Eventually the gears inside will be running metal to metal agianst their housing.
On another note with the 07+ Defender, low 6th is great for crusing down soft beaches, on a trip last weekend a lot of people were in high range in very soft sand, this was fine till they stopped and had to get going again.
Sand is weird stuff, I have tried climbing a sandy track in low 3rd with heaps of right foot and eventually come to a stop and digging 4 holes. I managed to drive the rest of the way up the hill by selecting low 1st, letting the clutch out and just crawling my way gently to the top.
Cheers,
Tim
Heres a pic of the center diff, (exploded), showing the shims I was talking about, (items 22, 25, and 27) :

I have to stay, the SIII is absolutely gutless on sand. Tried low range, but found it performed much better in high. Could be something to do with the tyres too, the have really strong sidewalls (someone mentioned 12 ply - but don't know if that's correct). Anyway, they don't bag out at all. Plus just hasn't got the "umph" for speed on sand driving. That was many years ago, would love to have another go with lessons from CAL, but Tony doesn't like camping on the sand.![]()
