    Head bolts

    For Easter break I'm going to embark on maintenance way out of my league, head job on a benz.

    The head bolts are like an allen bolt, but 12 sided. Is this the norm for head bolts? Where can I get the right socket?

    Also, should I remove the sprocket from the camshaft and cable tie the chain tight around the sprocket so that it cant move, or as per the workshop manual paint a reference line and remove the sprocket from the chain?

    Most tool shops should have the socket you need.
    when I do the falcon I just cable tie the chain to the sprocket, but it would not hurt to do both.
    Before I cable tie in on I have the crank on TDC, because the chain could still jump the crank sprocket, when moving things.
    you may not have enough room to leave the sprocket on the chain.

    A trick I used to use was put a tapered bit of wood down into the timing chain to wedge it. This way it held the chain tight onto the tensioner and the crank gear.

    And it works really well. Just remember to tie a peice of rope or wire to it so that you can get it back out!

    You may find that you have to remove the cam sprocket completely because it might not fit through the head as you lift it off.

    A standard Allen key should still fit these bolts, for a socket you need an inhex socket available from good tool shops. (or you could cut the right size Allen key and use it in that size standard socket)
