Mag wheel cleaner from Super Crap, or the like. You would be amazed at how much cleaner these type of products make the wheels.

In the age of dishwashes, some people just want to get out of using a little elbow grease.
Soapy water and a sponge works fine for me, if there is any tar spots I just get a little kero on a rag and clean it off first.
Only problem is I can't get those scratches off the rims where she clobbered the kerb with the left front wheel

For a start there I thought you were going to suggest puttng your wheels in the dishwasher

    Big dishwasher!

Actually, they'd probably fit into one of those commercial ones. At least the wheels without the tyres.

I also use one of those soft plastic brushes like you get in a brush and shovel set, with the aforementioned soapy water.
Don't use anything abrasive it will scratch up your wheels.

what sort of alloy wheel do you have, are they factory or aftermarket.

If you have a polished finish or some have a clear coat over them, the brake dust should just wash off with some soapy water if you regulary clean them. If they havent been cleaned for a long time, you might find that the brake dust has 'reacted' with the finish and you will need a good quality mag wheel cleaner to make them look presentable.

If the wheels dont have a smooth finish, like an open pore finish, then good luck cleaning them, they are a real problem to keep clean and a quality mag wheel ceaner and high pressure water is the only way to keep them clean.

I have found that BMW and Merc wheels are the worst, but generally LR wheels are OK

any chance of a pic of the offending wheels
