All hire vehicles SHOULD have front facing seats with retractable seat belts and load limits for the roof racks.
    And cargo barriers.

Very sad incident - innocent young tourists just having fun LEGALLY.

How many people are allowed to be carried before you require a bus licence? In NSW I believe an 11 seater is classifiesd as a bus.

I remember coming across a fender hire car at knife edge sand blow last year where the drag link for the steering arm had separated.

On closer inspection it was just a piece of thin walled tube with no threads or anything, just held on with a hose clamp.

Of the two major 4x4 hire companies in the Bay, one is very poor and the other one uses mainly new vehicles and turns them over every 2/3 years and has a big workshop.

The problem is that they deck the troopy out with seats down below, and then add another area on top for luggage, beer, water etc. This makes the COG much higher than it would normally be. If they left them as normal 5 seaters and let them put gear behind the seats at the back they would be much safer - well as safe as a troopie gets anyway.

However clearly the cost would nearly double to the end user. Their business plan clearly doesn't work with these parameters, and it would open them up to competition from all the normal hire places.

These kids died because of bad business.

There is a company at the Bay that hires Defenders and it survives well hiring the vehicles with a capacity for 5 people.
I cannot see why they have to offer vehicles with a capacity of 11 passengers.

More than 12 seats is a bus. (ie: 13 or more)

My Stage 1 is a 10 seater and has a rego class as a minibus, no special licence required.

6 forward facing, 4 inward facing.

NSW has a similar rego category: "SBS" (Small Bus)

Why? I don't know... You can drive a vehicle with up to 12 seats on a car licence so the rego class of small bus seems a bit redundant.

The Premier has just announced a likely reduction in
    Fraser Island speed limits.

Yet another half-as*ed knee jerk response by the government.
