I was flicking thru the latest LRO mag and on page 86 I found a dealership selling 2nd hand rangies and defenders and was wondering what they are worth in the motherland.
Then I spied a nice green 90 with dual ARB diff locks, new chassis, new lift kit, full roll cage, new mddies and rims, rock sliders, winchbar and winch, steering and diff guards, light bar and it was 7,995 pounds which is about $16,400 ozzie dollars.
There are 2000 P38's with updated headlights and 20 inch wheels for between 8 and 12 thousand pounds which is 16500 to 24500 dollars which seems about par here for a stocker
Now that seems pretty damn cheap to me so I was wondering why dont we have more 90's in Australia, maybe then they would be more affordable. I am guessing its about supply and demand that keeps them so cheap.

they salt their roads, so new chassis or not, they are generally in poor condition underneath.

Yes Andrew e beat me to it, but I was thinking RUST will be the big issue with older UK landies.
As mentioned, rust is a big problem with the Landies here. If not looked after, the chassis have usually turned to dust within 10yrs... Then you've got the corrosion of the brake lines which run along the tops of the chassis, etc...
It's not a pretty sight.
However, there are some gems out there but you have to look at a lot of dogs before you find them.

Land Rovers in general in the UK hold their value well in comparison to most other vehicles here.
Defenders in particular hold their values especially 90's in comparison to 110's
Range Rovers second hand value has dropped recently due to the increases in Road Fund Licence (equivalent to your rego) which can go up to £440 or about a A$1,000. Combined that with our fuel prices and the current economic crisis (thank you Gordon and George) has meant that the top end motor values have plummented.
If you want to buy a second hand 90 in the UK avoid those pre owned by the Marines (corrossion might be a problem) and the Paras (they tend to drop theirs). A vehicle which has spent its life in the south of England is less prone to the ust worms then ones from the north due to the differing amounts of salt on the roads.

funny you say about rust mine over here in bligthy is a 85 model and the chassis is solid yet i got a few customers around h reg that need new chassis
Flicking through the mags, its always struck me that used Land Rovers in the UK are more expensive than an equivalent vehicle here. My theory is that LR's are generally a more popular 4WD in the UK than here, hence the lower rate of depreciation. Maybe I'm not comparing apples with apples...
The parts prices are another matter - I wish we had access to the same variety of parts at UK prices. Even taking the exchange rate into consideration, they're a lot better.
landrovers are very popular in the uk I dare say suzuki would be second....its quite rare to see toyota or nissan as a choice.
landies are so popular that you see them ALL the time to the point that its boring its like every second person has got one! or at least where I used to live it was
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......
