SubscriberHas anyone replaced a Thermostat in an Engel MRFT 540E G4?
That is the manual type model but with a fan and 10 years old.
I defrosted mine over the weekend and subsequently the thermostat has died. I left it out in thesun to dry out and dry some painting I did to kill rust.
However it is not an "old school" thermostat with a brass tube.
It looks like a thermocouple wire, and the control on top is just a rheostat with a small circuit board. It must control a relay elsewhere.
I googled but no joy on wiring diagrams or how tos.
New step is the Service Agent I guess.

Here was I thinking mine was the last of the old school with no electronics.
Geez.
The wiring from the thermo sensor disappears into a steel box which also contains the power supply etc.
I open it up and no relays etc etc, but just 2 enormous (to me anyway) circuit boards with about 12 MOSFETS and not a relay to be seen.
It must work by detecting the resistance of the sensor wire in the fridge like the temp sensor on a multimeter. It must then compare it to a voltage reduced by the resistor under the knob. One or other has gone bad or the electronics have died GULP!
The thing is entirely electronic with just the knob on top manual.
The only other mechanical thing is the potentiometer attached to the knob.
I hope that it is the problem.
Hmmm, I might just put a multimeter over the potentiometer.

I can tell you I have gone through 3 motors in my "D" series fridge.

My SS45 went gaga a few months ago - compressor wouldnt cut out - figured it was the thermostat making my beers too frosty.
Like you I had pulled mine all apart to try to fix it, couldnt and so went to the shop...
Was all dreading parts etc etc, went to portable fridge solutions, genuine engel thermostat (majik black box) with plug in wires to motor and new dial was like $55
Parts were plug and play, easy as.

SubscriberI took it to the local Engel service agent today and he also thought it would be the potentiometer under the dial.
However this is not a sure thing as this is not the thermostat, that is on the main circuit board.
He will also check the amp draw of the compressor and look at the fan, although he said fans are fine unless noisy.
he made a few comments which I thought were interesting.
The model like mine is the most reliable. He sees a lot more of the later ones.
He will not touch Waecos as the compressor unit is $900 and he had to chop the fridge to get it in, whereas an Engel is $600 and bolt out and in.
He sees a lot of failures from running them on Generators other than Honda or Yamaha. They should only be run from batteries and the batteries charged via a charger.
