I took my roof rails off for the same reason

Thanks guys.....it was more that they had to take the rails off to paint the roof so was wondering whether to have them bog the holes and paint over it especially as the have to rub it right back

Anyway thanks for the link its very helpful

It came with a metal mesh (holes about 6cm by 4cm) on top of the bars, which makes it easy to use straps with hooks to secure.
Sometimes, I just lay a dirt-trap mat (like 3M's Nomad) on top to give the cargo a cushioned ride.

    • All aluminium - weight 23kg total.
    • Made of 1 sheet of amplimesh type material with a round tubular frame. This makes it easy to lash ropes over and tie down at any point.
    • No sides - allows for a wide load and better overhead clearance. It also means that any future roof top tent doesn't sit on the rails, but spreads its weight across the base.
    • 8 broad legs, but no common rail along the side. This distributes the weight, but allows flexion so as not to crack gutters. I read somewhere that the weight distributing roof rack rails on a LWB can be detrimental to the gutters on a Land Rover.
    • A small mounting platform at the front for lights & aerials.
    • An annexxe rail on either side for sliding on a lightweight campers fly awning.

Wow, this is almost exactly what i want to make up for my county at some stage - no uprights for a low line for clearance(with trees etc really needed when running 37s), light weight so less noticable with side angles etc, tube section on the outer to protect the roof and give the rack some strength with a mess floor, but i would like mine to follow the roof line down the sloped front and all the way to just behind the windscreen...

How much did it set you back for materials to build it?
