A friend is interested in a new Defender for towing two horses in a float between home in Sydney and farm at Robertson in the southern highlands. The toss up is between Defender and Toyota 70 series. It's known that the toyota has more grunt , but the Defender is preferred as long as it will do the job. Towing load is about two tons. Any one with experience/reports?

I regular tow a tandem stock trailer 3 ton plus and find it much better and faster than my previous 75 toyota. No problems doing 100 km/h, but not too many hills around Yarrawonga. Full time four wheel drive ABS brakes and traction control are big bonus towing on dirt roads.![]()
I would think 2 horses + float would be well over 2t
Assuming you are talking about a new turbo Toyota - The bigger engine will have exponentially more torque way down low which will make it more drivable and seem to be doing it a lot easier with far less gear changes. If the Toyota in Q is not turbo it will be painful.
So if this was me and this vehicle was only to tow horses I would get the Toyota. If the vehicle is to be used as a car / 4wd as well – I would get the Land Rover

There is more to towing than a big engine. The tojo has more outright power but is let down by the gearbox where the defender has just as good useable power and a better gearbox, this is on the new model,on the old model don't even think about a non-turbo diesel cruiser, the 1HZ couldn't pull the skin off burnt milk and the gearbox's are complete rubbish, the T/D on the other hand isn't a bad engine and the gearbox's are alot stronger. The defender drives better, handles better and stops better than any troopy model.Around Robinson you will be a moving roadblock regardless what you have, lots of hills and lots of corners means that handling and breaking are just as important as power. Never had a problem towing in my TD5 130.
Can't say for the puma
If its any help I tow a 1.5t camper trailer behind mine with ease and 2 weekends back recovered a broken down Jeep, towed it 5km through bush tracks - including a 25-30 degree incline for about 150m - and then about 15km back to town. The low range 1st gear and the anti-stall make it absolutely brilliant to tow through wash outs and over rocky ground in a very controlled manner.

Have just spent the last couple of weekends doing our garden beds and lawn. We did around 5 trips from the garden centre towing a double axle 8x5 trailer loaded to the gunnels with soil conditioner on each trip, then did the same with the mulch. I daresay that would have pushed us well over 2 tons of soil on each trip (6 scoops = 2 cubic metres = bloody heavy) and the Puma handled it with aplomb. I would definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, go with the Puma.
Now - I have little practical advice in regard to towing, but if he buys the Toyota - the downside is - he's stuck with a Toyota.![]()
