If the blade entered the ground, your mate had to move the foot closer to knife to that position. If you threw the weapon between his feet, you could return to the initial stance. The first to loose balance was the loser.
Sounds like you played the tame version. When I was a kid you got points for getting the knife as close to a foot as possible, and the winning move called splitting the banana, I'll leave the rest to your imagination.

Pidgeons, got a story. This dear old lady with a walking stick came into the shop.Wanted to know if we had any netting that she could make bags out of.For what purpose? I ask.well.She trains gun dogs for a living, she feeds pidgeons in her garden, then puts some kind of dope in the food, goes out when they are drowsy, bangs them on the head with her stick, and puts them in the freezer. She then fires them out of a static catapult for the trainee gun dogs to retrieve. All this in a suburban street in Southport. She is a bit miffed because the neighbours have complained to the council and she now has to go to a park or somewhere,so she needs the bags to carry the frozen pidgies.I could not keep a straight face, had to go and get somebody else to serve her.
She must have pretty crappy gun dogs (wire terriors or blue heelers?), I had a GSP that could catch wild, native birds in an open 150 acre park. He could bring them back to us unharmed. That was purely instinct, so you couldn't punish him for it, so we used to let him go for it. It could take him 10-15 minutes to sneak up close enough to catch them, pointing and freezing all the time. Just before he could get one, we would make a noise to scare the birds away, the canine glares we got varied between 'what you doing stupid?' to '*&%# you!!'

You must have two! You couldn't be silly enough to enter that competition playing with one.Be a bit hard too, like solitary chess.

I just reread your post, in Panda's quote, Cooper. It says 'halfway', the first time I read it I misread it as 'my'.
