    slightly off topic, how many other countries use a similar system and do their road tolls of the young compate statistically? I didn't have this as I got my licence a few months after turning 16 but when I moved to Aus. I wasa told that since my licence was dated from renewal not original time of issue that i would require p plate although i possessed an equivelent to a hr licence! End result the nsw registry allowed me to bypass the p's if i redid my licence again with their inspectors even after proving a ten year blemish free record.

    Couldn't find which countries use a similar system, but Australia is fairly good compared to comparable countries, neither the best nor worst. Probably the most nearly comparable traffic is USA or Canada, as most of the others have less intensive road useage (shorter distances and/or more public transport), but the differences are not major. - deaths per billion vehicle kilometres;

    Australia 7.9
    UK 6.3
    USA 9
    NZ 10.1
    Canada 9.2
    Ireland 10.9
    Sweden 5.9
    Denmark 7.7
    France 8.5
    Germany 7.4
    Japan 10.3
