    Unhappy Magna transmission help

    Hi guys,

My "weekday" car has died (2000 TJ Magna, 180,000km, not tiptronic). The auto trans has a blown pump (or something ).

Seems the best value is a full reco/reco changeover or just put in a 2nd hand one (doesn't seem worth it to remove and fix just the problem).

Does anyone know of a good supplier of 2nd hand ones (pref in Melbourne)? The local guy i called quoted about $900... Does this sound right? He also said there's about 4 types for that model and i need to get the number off the top of the trans...

Is there any truth to the rumour that Mitsubishi was doing swapovers on a recall type basis?

    Any ideas will be helpful...

    Thanks in advance.

I would go full reconditioned or new. Too much risk putting in a second hand one unless you know what it is like. Even if you got a second hand one I would have a full service ad inspction done as minimum.
Ring some of the bigger Mitsubishi dealers as they may have some new surplus stock sitting in crates. I have seen this often and one of the Mitsi dealers advertises motors and boxes here in WA in the Quokka.
Having said that when I stuffed my Pajero manual box going to SA I was quoted $3500 for a rebuild by Mitsi and $4500 for a new box. I had mine rebuilt by a Ford dealership with new clutch for $1200.

    Steer clear of R A T C O Reconditioned Automatic Transmission

I should have known with a name like that. I was unlucky enough to choose them to reco the auto in a TM Magna I had years ago. It was flaring and changing violently into second. I told them the problem and I paid good money, only to find that it did precisely the same thing when I got it back. "They all do that" was their story.

    A grade you know whats...

Mate of mine is a trans builder, he bought out RATCO, ran the business for a couple of months then shut it down, to many headaches from the previous owners, he still had another shop in Cranbourne though (mate did) but he sold that after making a heap of cash and now builds from home. Did alot of magna boxes

Vern, after what I consider "theft" by Ratco from me, I hope your mate reamed the previous owners when he bought the business.

Go and see Rodney at Wholesale transmissions in Barry Street Bayswater 97628004.

He should be able to sort you out and he's rather local to you.
