All of the above Plus-:
The Hummvee was built to be operated and maintained by the lowest common denominator. There in no Park function in the Auto, that would complicate things in the minds of the simple. Easier to just start it with the footbrake applied and drive off, pity if the last driver left it in "R"
There's no spare wheel on the Military model, when I saw my first HumVee on K89 I asked the driver what happened if they got a flat.
"Call the tyre Platoon", was the reply. OK OK so they have runflats but thats just complicating things, later models with CTIS-Central Tyre Inflation System, were nice, just plug and forget.
I could train a monkey to drive a Hummer, given enough bananas.

The H3 is well best not spocken of they are a joke!
Read it in a magazine i have around somewhere, it has exotic and ridiculous cars.
Thats because nothing hangs down except the ends of the suspension arms.
The centre of gravity is in the middle of the vehicle and about 6 inches above the floor.
They also have a 130" wheelbase. But the wheels are in each corner. And they have roughly 18" of ground clearance whilst only being around 6' tall. Very cramped inside though. They are aorund the same lenght as my D2 when the have a bullbar and tyre carrier on them.

Have any of you seen the email doing the rounds of the Knight XV. The thing is bloody huge and makes the hummer look small. I'd post photo's but that technology evades me.
Costing $310 000 and they are only making 100. Can't imagine who would want one, but I would love to have a look at one.

After off roading with few over the past 12 months my opinion of the hummers has changed somewhat. They are more capable outside of the desert than they are given credit for. After speaking with people and offroading with people who are experienced in how to use them and make the most of their features they are actually very capable.
Off road they have a torque distribution system sort of like manual traction control, when wheels spin off road they driver simply drives with their foot on the throttle and the other foot on the brake slightly and power is transfered to the wheels that have traction. Without knowledge of this system and going against the grain and braking up hill etc they are **** off road, being all independent suspension they have very little wheel travel, But they have excellent ground clearance because everything is tucked up underneath (however this means that a seemingly massive cabin has bugger all space in it) and being less than 1800mm tall they have a low centre of gravity so they can traverse nasty side slopes that would have a defender tipping over.
Having said all that the obvious limitation of size and width does limit their use in the bush, especially when driving narrow tracks that require the nevigation of narrow gaps between trees etc.
So whilst i would pick a defender everytime, the Hummer H1 isnt as bad as I had initially believed.

The H2 is a Chevy Suburban with a "Hummer Style" body. There is no way that it is fitted with any sort of armored flooring (I have worked under one).
I did read somewhere that there were some modified for use by private security type contractors in the middle east - these may have some armoring installed - but the "standard" models definitely have nothing like it.
Cheers .........
