I believe that is the principle they use to separate aluminium cans out of the recycle garbage.

Do they use it here? I saw it was used in the USA. If it was used here, I'd expect less concern about putting small aluminium bits. e.g., screw caps in the recycling

They do in at least some - have been in a large recycling facility in Melbourne that has an eddy current separator for aluminium.
