they did not sort a solution until the following year with a movable tail. and the year after that when they would warp both wings at the same time producing about equal drag on both wings.

the Wright brothers stuck to there control system but never got it sorted. flexible wings were never going to work.

the real first controlled flight was by Alberto Santos-Dumont,

but Glenn Curtiss was the guy who really cracked it along with Sopwith
The story I heard, was that a group of Aussies either built or started to build an exact replica of it, but discovered the same thing, ie, it was both unreliable to control, and needed a specific set of conditions in order to guarantee take-off and subsequent flight.
In short, it was a powered kite and flew like one, not a "true aeroplane" that can take off from level surface, climb, (obviously!) fly straight & level, turn under control without losing height, descend and land on the same or higher elevation, in zero-wind conditions.

I understand the Smithsonian - or wherever the Wright Flyer is exhibited - is under legal restraint to 'support' the view that this machine's achievement is 101% 'kosher'

On the re-enactment of the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers first powered flight, the aircraft didn't even get off the ground. Talk about marginal! But then again Louis Bleriot only managed to get across the English Channel first because his overheating engine was fortuitously cooled in a rain shower. Such is life....

See vid below from the 3:45 to 4.00 minute mark for the re-enactment flight.

The more significant Wright brothers accomplishments would probably be them designing and performing advanced (for the time) wind tunnel testing, using lots of models (100+) to improve on the underdeveloped contemporary aerodynamic data available. They used this data to design more efficient aircraft wings and then just as importantly, more efficient propellers. This really has had long term benefits to aviation.
