Does it go away with application of the brakes?
Our Subaru Forester (MY99 auto 2.0l) has developed a squeal when cold. It starts to squeal when I take off, but the squeal only lasts for about 200 metres.
It then doesn't do it again until then next morning.
I don't think it's a slipping belt as that should occur sprodically, not just on first start; and it's quite loud.
Anyone got any ideas?
Does it go away with application of the brakes?
I would think ,if its a manual it colld be the spiggot bearing, used to be very common problem in Ford Escorts/Cortinas in the 70's

BigJon, I forgot to check the brakes this morning so I'll do that tomorrow.
Thanks Sumo, I lifted the bonnet at start up this morning and had a listen. It seems like the squeal is coming from the harmonic balancer and there's a slight rubber burning smell.
She has done 246000km now with no other faults (other than a rear main seal that went 1yr out of warranty and when I went to collect her from the dealer they said 'No Charge'..Subaru picked up the bill as they said it should never have happened!)
I will have to wait to replace the HB as the D3's in Albany at the mo having an extreme makeover.

Can't say much at this stage until she's back and the dust has settled, but suffice to say that LRA have listened to my (post manufacturer's warranty) cries of despair and have taken her off to locate and correct any issues.
I would always check the simplest/cheapest things first, and I've had a squealing fan belt on start-up that disappears in first few hundred metres, so I'd hit the belt with some belt grip spray as a starting point - good product for keeping belts in good nick even if it isn't your problem...

Its a belt slip for sure, once the slip causes heat its griping.
Just inherited the bosses Rodeo for 3 weeks, yet another new set of belts on,we HAVE to do it ever 20thou with this pig, couldnt put up with the squeel, dont know how he does,we give him enough poo about it.
Another way to check,I went through a deep puddle yesterday, the brake and alternator lights lit up.Suspected a belt thrown, not so soon as it got warm and dried out normality resumed.
