Had a weekend 4wding with some friends in the Blue Mountains and did the 6 Foot Track...noticed a problem with engaging the centre diff lock during the weekend. That Sunday night I heard a noise coming from the drivetrain - in the morning had a drive from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast...about Singleton it suddenly got really bad sounding like a gear tooth was floating around in the transfer case...had a pit stop, drained the transfer case and bits of gear teeth came out with the oil including a whole tooth!

But having to be back at work the next day I decided to add fresh oil and take a risk - the longest trip I've done from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast doing only 70-80km/h...
Have been trying to limp by until I get time to get it done...anyway my mum had her Freelander in having some work done on it, and needed a car so I lent the Defender to her telling her to go very easily! She called me a few hours later saying she was driving along when there was a whole lot of loud noises, and Safara wouldn't go...
I got there and found the front prop shaft had failed grabbing the wiring loom shredding it and putting a huge dent in the floor. (I'd greased everything 2 weeks prior

) Also the transfer case was in a rather sad state.
Anyways, long story shorter here's what was inside the diff where the planetary gears should have been:
Looks like it's going to set me back around $4000.
Was thinking about a reconditioned unit (btw, Ashcroft Transmissions reco LT230 1.4 was the cheapest at $2150 - with most expensive at $2900), but am thinking about a genuine parts new one as they're "only" $3200...
OK, so I'll get off my soapbox now! lol
