I might start building an underground bunker I think....porcine and equine viruses, more earthquakes and tsunamis, typhoons, northern hemisphere summer experiencing winter conditions and southern hemisphere winter experiencing summer conditions.....

Wonder how much the filly would have fetched at the sales for the owner?

And can be transmitted form animals to humans and from humans to humans. It is one of an increasing number of zoonotic diseases that result from closer interaction between humans (or domestic animals) and wildlife (in this case flying foxes) due to the spread of human settlement and disturbance of wildlife. To some extent the increase is probably only apparent, because of better communications and diagnosis.

You may be right - I think that may have been a generalisation from other bat-mediated zoonotic diseases such as the Malaysian one, Nipa disease I think it called, where bats infected pigs which infected humans who in at least some cases infected each other.

Yes, or at least to say there's been no evidence so far. According to [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henipavirus"]Wikipedia[/ame], only 9 outbreaks have been documented since discovery, of which only 3 included human infection.

All 3 human infections manifested differently (affecting different systems within the body) suggesting they're likely to be different strains of the same virus.

As John mentioned previously, human-to-human transmissions of its closest relative, the Nipah virus have been confirmed in India and SE Asia. The early outbreaks of this virus have all been encephalitic (affecting the brain) in humans , so human to human transmission was unlikely due to lack of direct exposure to the virus. Later human outbreaks affected the respiratory system, making transmission much more likely through coughing and the like.

Putting two and two together, I'd say it's too early to call, but the Hendra virus could be potentially nasty if the wrong strain comes along.

That said, I wouldn't be losing sleep over it as the outbreaks to date have both been very rare and very isolated.

This is what happens when you delete the vents and put a working AC in a Defender, the portal to hell has been opened, this is the beginning of the end of the world.

    IMHO Dullbird is to blame.
