Fresh food may be a bargain in the Uk, from what I'm lead to believe Fresh meat in the UK is very very expensive compared to other countries and also most of their produce is from overseas.?????

Correct, most of the fruit and veg comes from places like north africa, spain, netherlands. When i was chefing in the uk for 3 years i was amazed at how little wasnt sourced locally . Same in South Africa, i went to a chain supermarket and was appalled at the quality of the limp vegies and fruit, we have it lucky here for sure.
