After hearing all the media hype about how the American giant Costco was going to turn around our shopping way of life with BIG discounts.
I signed up on line last night and paid the $60 annual membership to allow me to spend some of my hard earned $$$.
So off the family went to Harbour Town Docklands in Melbourne, a 80 kms round trip from home.
We we got there we were faced with a 3/4 hour traffic jam at the entrance, and no parking avail so we did a U turn and parked elsewhere and walked in.
When we got there we noticed a line of approx 300 metres of customers with shopping trolleys waiting to enter the store. Staff were at the door checking for membership cards or NO ENTRY!
I got in by showing my online receipt and was given a temporary entry slip for that day.
Well the place was large, they had Tvs, computer, food, clothes etc even a jewelry section and a optomatrist.
I scoured the aisles looking for any tool, or 4WD accessory bargains, well to my disappointment there was none. A couple of tents, a couple of eskies, some motor oil and some tool boxes.
There were hundreds of people inside but we found that the prices were nothing special, and most of my local suppliers had similar prices!
The motor oils were Haveline 20litre drums and the usual Valvoline XLD and XD in 5 litre tubes at prices you would get every day at Kmart or Supacrap.
Sure there were people filling their trolleies up with the hype of thinking they were getting a bargain. We walked out without buying anything.
It definitely was not as stated on TV programs that Costco was going to be the big discounter player in the supermarket scene. They also branded the produce with their brand just like Aldis do. Some one I heard commented that Aldi's was cheaper!.
The check out was a joke, a queue that would take an hour to get through, no express lanes.
We left very disappointed.
They claim you can cancel your membership at anytime for a refund.
I did this just now, but got an automated email that due to membership enquiries it could take up to 2 weeks to get back to me.
What's the old saying??? " ah yes, if it's too good to be true then it probably isn't true.
All I can Say Good one current affair and today tonight, next time research your prices better!
Well, I spose your user name says it all.
Cheers Dean.
from what i gather, they're "cheap" because you can buy lots of things in bulk.
So if you want a new TV, they're no better than existing retailers.
But if you want a box of 40 Mars Bars, they'll do a good deal...
...yeh, i still don't get the hype of it either

Not aware of how Costco operate there do use them here and find if you know your prices there are some real bargains to be had. The savings on 2 containers of our normal brand of washing machine powder is sufficient to pay for the membership cost.
Electrical are no cheaper just than if you shopped around however you do not need to haggle for the best price.
Found here that 5 litres of Castrol oil (2x5 in packaging) is a third cheaper than retail.
Food is where the savings can be made though. Fresh food is a bargain. Processed food can be cheaper if you are careful and watch the own brand stuff. Like all own brand some is very good others just average.
You need to show you are involved in retail here to go in to the shop. Can anyone just sign on there and go in?
All there items are marked with what per unit cost is. Toilet rolls 48 Pack say 52c per roll, the same brand at our Safe way on special is 48c per roll.
I kg of smoked salmon $28 a kilo, our local supermarket fresh fish dept $28 per kg.
The motor oils were not bulk packs but but single items, supacrap and kmart , same price.
Nescafe 500 gram coffe was the same price that the local safe way has it on special for.
Yes you have to know your prices, I for one only have a certain amount of expendable income and have to try and save a few $$
Some might have more $$$$ or like to max their credit cards,
Also it depends where you live too that determines what you pay at the check out, well known that in more affluent areas the prices are generally higher.
(I suppose living in the CBD or close you pay through the nose, so the Costco might be cheaper for them.)
The media hype was that you could buy just about anything there, may be in the US yes.
But as my user name say It'snotworthcomplaining!, because no one listens any way.....
and as for having to pay $60 to shop, they could still trade without charging a membership ( just a gimmick I reckon)
They have a merchant card $55 per annum you have to provide info that you are a business. The Gold Card at $60 is for the Joe Blow consumer.
Fresh food may be a bargain in the Uk, from what I'm lead to believe Fresh meat in the UK is very very expensive compared to other countries and also most of their produce is from overseas.?????
My in-laws travel to the USA quite a lot and go into Costco over there.
Last time they were in, they had a big promotion near the door selling......
.......
.......
wait for it .....
