Was reading an accident report the other day, an American C-17 crew landed but forgot to lower the gear.......how embarrassing would that be??
(They slid for about 1.7km, no doubt thinking all the time s*%# s^&*#$ my career is over!)
It look so small.

Probably was a dare... one pilot to the other:
"I bet ya $50 I cn land this baby without wheels and without breaking it"
"OK, ill double that, if you can keep it from sliding more than 2ks"

How embarrassment!!!!! (with apologies to Effie)
That would be the reason why air traffic control in Australia always ask military pilots to check for green lights, indicating their undercarriage is lowered.
As an aside, we had a Cessna Caravan float plane land at Hamilton Island wheels up. Only skidded on the floats for about 50 metres, but a crew of about 30 spent the next 3 hours picking all of the aluminium out of the bitumen. Within 15 minutes a crane was out on the runway, lifted the Cessna, wheels were lowered, Cessna put back down, started up and taxied off. The pilots employment was terminated as this was the second time he'd done it, and they'd only recently refitted the repaired floats.

Reminds me of a time at Sydney S(KS)A when a pilot (lighty) landed, was asked by ATC to "expedite clearance of the runway". In his haste to clear the run way he retracted his undercarriage. Needless to say the runway (07/25) wasn't cleared for a couple of hours.
