I was on the computer and had the TV running with no sound.

The first breaking news caught my attention. My first thought was wow that movie will be worth seeing, great effects.

We watched it till 4:30 am when my wifes ex boss rang to see if she would come in and work the phones fo DFAT.
I then went to work and started pulling everything on 911 for the breifing room.
I still have hundred's of pictures at work on it.

Not a real good time for me but much worse for others. I have real clarity of that time.
08/11 flew to Adelaide as Grandmother in critical care (pulled through but was touch and go for 4 days).
11/11 Australian date time (10/11 in US still) wife rings me to tell me a friends daughter - my daughters friend had died of cancer as a 5yo and I had to fly back home for the funeral.
12/11 Aust date (11/11 US) at Mum & Dads in SA could not sleep due to things occuring over the last few days when brother rings after midnight / early morning of 12/11 Aust 11/11 US and tells me to change channels quick as a plane had hit the WTC. Initial reports were it was an accident and then live the second plane hit. Rest is history and I had to fly 2 days later.
    Very sad piece of history.

    Some excellent photos here:

Military photos of the Twin Towers - Fullscreen

that show the enormity of the situation in Manhattan that day.

    cheers, DL

didn't know about it until I woke up and kids told me about it

looked at the TV coverage and immediately thought "what despicable bastardry"........ taking so many innocent lives, affecting so many people.... it later occurred to me that at no stage did I for any reason think it was accidental

I was to find out a bit later in the day that our daughter who was travelling to the US on business (by then of course stranded in LA - but that is another story) had a meeting scheduled in LA that day....

one of the other people who was to attend the meeting had become a murder victim on one of the affected flights...................

LA just about shut down, all business was cancelled of course, and it took her about a week to get back to Oz (which thankfully she safey did - thanks Qantas)

brought it all quite a bit closer and caused a flurry of telephone calls.....

one glimmer of hope for me was the contrast between the selfless heorism and bravery of the emrgency personnel and the utter bastardry of the perpetrators

I was drinking in the boozer and my initial statement was "Some ATC is about to get it in the neck."

when the next plane hit my comment was.

Bet some idiot media pilots flown in too close.

    9/11 - what happened on 9th November?

I do remember listening to some quite horrific news on the radio on 11/9/2001.

I was woken up by my Mum about 5:30am on the 12th and watched it on TV for few hours before going to school to do a Maths B exam.

At the time Dad was in Chicago and had been due to fly out late on the 11th. We hadn't been able to get through to him before my exam started so I had my mobile sitting on the desk while I did the exam. He got through to Mum after a few hours saying that he had moved out of his CBD hotel to an airport motel and was waiting for the next flight home. It took him a few days to get on a plane.

I was in NY at Christmas time last year and the hole in the middle of the city where the towers were is erie and very sad. Its like a scar on the face of such a beautiful city. There is a church and graveyard just south of the Towers that was left completly unscathed from the collapsing buildings except for one tree that was knocked over. Again its quite spooking considering it was so close the towers.

The NY Firefighters Museium has a section dedicated to 9/11 and a mermorial which you must visit if you ever are in NY. Its an emotional journery looking at footage and photos of the attacks, recovered bits of the planes and buildings and finally the memorial for the firefighters who died.
