I prefer plastic. I still do have some steel ones and even though they are good Rheem ones they do eventually corrode and flake. I actually had one do this at only 2 yo and contaminate and block the fuel system on my Disco Tdi. Only use them for storage now and then transfer to plastic via a filter just in case. Plastic ones are generally easier to pour as well.

I did use steel ones in the past, but I recently had one develop a rust pin-hole in the bottom leaking diesel through the back of my landy :( I have now bought the plastic ones with the built in spout. The steel ones also make a hell of a racket over bumps when they are empty.

I bought 2x Willow (IIRC) plastics in Cairns, prior to driving to WA. Both leaked from the caps, making smoking in the car exciting. They were exchanged, no dramas at SuperCrap Cloncurry. The replacements have been trouble free.

I use plastic ones.
And I abide by a sort of colour code
red is petrol or if in the small can 2 stroke
black is diesel

I thought yellow was for diesel.........
what yellow for? its not water is it as I thought water was in blue.

I've got half a dozen Rheem steel ones from the 50s. Still going strong although I'd say when they fail I'll end up with plastic (if I need them).
I abide by a colour scheme as well, they were painted red when I used them for petrol, now I use them for diesel they are painted red. :D

Black or Yellow is accepted industry standard for diesel. The black ones usually have yellow caps, but not always.
I use Red = Petrol, Yellow/Black = Diesel, Light Green = Kero or Metho, Dark Green = Water.
