The experience i has at the west coast changed my mind re lpg. So now I have another tdi as you know
Go the diesel!![]()
ok, so, within the next month or so I will be looking in earnest for a discovery, most likely in victoria as they are thin on the ground here in Tassie, and over priced normally.
basically, i'm looking at one in reasonable nick, diesel, and a 5 door. up to 8k max (probably including getting me over, and the disco and me back to tas). Why not a cheaper V8, I'd love the power, but I need it to be economical for commuting to work.
i've been poking around carsales.com.au and found a good range of vehicles in the 6-8K range. However in that range a few duel fuel v8's also appear in the mix. Now I couldn't cope with a pure gas machine because some places in tassie (thinking the west coast) gas is thin on the ground. But a good conversion that doesn't steal too much cargo space could be worth considering.
Any real con's to a v8 on gas that I should look at or be concerned with.
When I have hte $$ after my upcoming holiday I may enlist some help to check out some vehicles on teh ground, so watch out for me![]()

I can only talk about V8s and gas not having a diesel.
Make sure you have a good gas mechanic near you, most normal mechanics will not touch gas.
The biggest let down with gas is the Rover ignition system tends to give out a week spark and gas needs a you beut spark.
If sequential gas no real dramas.
If normal mixer gas then invest in magnicore leads, quality plugs and an RPI power amp II

That will remove any gas power/performance issues, at a very reasonable price.
Most of the diesels will have high Km on them, check out the cost of a major diesel service 150 km, 250 km, they can be frighteningly expensive.
I must be behind on the goss, what happened "out west" stooge?
I should say that my bias is towards getting a 300TDI if I can wrangle it, and there are some nice ones out there, just need to raise more $$$. A few nice ones have caught my eye at 6-7K, If I can wrangle 8k out of the missus I can get some good rubber, or a snorkel at least (must have in tassie for a TD).

The price of gas is increasing, by 2012 (IIRC) gas price will be on par with motor spirit.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
I had wondered about that, but LNG is taking off down here, and is supposedly cheaper than LPG. No idea about public availability.
The loss of storage space is a concern to me with gas as well. And with uncertainty abotu a decent gas mechanic down here from what black betty said, I think Diesel will be the only real option for me.

I could have sold you the best 3.9 LPG powered D1 in WA 6 months ago but anyway I found that as long as the mixture is right, the plugs and leads are replaced every 12 months that LPG is very good. The savings are very real on gas and the V8 can be tuned to run very smooth, mine was far smoother and responsive on gas than petrol as was my 2.25 four before it.It's a personal choice but I couldn't walk away from my D1 it was in that good a condition so I went the gas way instead of holding out for a Tdi.I'd go on the overall condition of the vehicle not the motor it has.
