Well I don't care about reputations (wouldn't have bought a Land Rover if that worried me)and from what we have seen when out and about they all keep your beer cold and your choice of fridge is excactly that, "your choice"

Our choice was a Waeco and we looked long and hard before deciding, the main points for our choice were.

    1) lighter (wife needs to carry it too)

    2) smaller for the same internal capacity.

    3) battery protection

    4) better insulated doesn't NEED a bag.

    5) uses less power than all 12v fridges(40lt)

    6) that stupid gap between the cooling element and the wall of the fridge in the Engel

    7) has a dairy section

    8) price, even with an insulation bag the Waeco was cheaper.

This was why we chose the Waeco over the Engel, as for the other fridges we looked at, it was price and comparable overall size verses internal capacity.

I really liked the EverKool but the dealers would not discount there fridges no matter how much we begged

We are happy with our choice, 5yrs now and still going well, it goes 24/7 not only is it a camping fridge, we use it as a beer fridge at home as well

Hi All, I like all small fridges that work AND are easy to fix, with out dought the Engel covers that with ease..And Im sorry , is the best on power use. and that is a fact. you can fix any part of a engel fridge. not so with a waceo..and that bit between the inside and the vap. is because it makes it twice as good at cooling ,, twice the area to take in heat..and when it needs replacing is easy to do..the waceo is a tip job..like all fridges with in built vaps and that is a fact. And as far as weight they all are weavey when full... And as we read this, waceo have gone to a cheep chinnees commpressor .. yep a copy of the very good danfoss... and dont leave the waceo out in the sun or the lid wont fit... the danfoss is by far the best comp.bd35 uses 4.5 to 5 amps.. and the bd50 on the bigger ones ,is a little bit up from that.....The best fridge by far is the luna and that is a fact and so is the price... just love your little fridge and let it breath and it will love you.. I know I fix them.....Bob

Ok so how are you at rebuilding the electronic temp controllers in the more modern engels?? how about finding parts for the really old ones that *cough* never break down?

I get the feeling many of you are living in the past when engels were built like TDI defenders - no electronics... those days are long gone!

IMHO, anything that needs an insulating bag put over it to keep stuff cold in hot weather did not have enough insulation built into the design - but wait that is both engel AND waeco

I thought the bag was optional........it only helps it be more efficent and protects it from scratches etc...

I know people that have used it without the bag and still been very happy

The Enel is a great choice. My #1 pick. I have a 60 litre that we have had for 13 years and it does not miss a beat and now have a small 27lt as well.
The Waecos are a good lower budget choice, but you do get what you pay for. I have seen several with broken handles and a few with electrical problems, but their warranty should cover these issues.

Speak to an Engel specialist. All parts for the older Engels are available as there is not much to them and if not parts can be adapted. A friend had a 27yo Engel rebuilt not long ago (new compressor). And this fridge has never had a bag and been in a serious car rollover about 15 years ago.As for the new electronics, there is still not much to them and all parts are available and/or substitute parts are available. Why would you rebuild the elec temp controller? Easier to just replace. If you bother to check refrigeration specialist catalogues this would become apparent and was pointed out to me by a family member who is a fridgie. Also the compressor is a Danfoss type so parts are easily obtainable.
Yes the Engels have advanced with technology but they are still the most bullet proof of all fridges. Not saying there is anything wrong with other types and budgets, it horses for courses and I would have an Engel in preference, but that could change with finances available should I require a replacement.

Our choice was a Waeco and we looked long and hard before deciding, the main points for our choice were.

    1) lighter (wife needs to carry it too)
Not by much, take the bag and transit base off the Engel and there is little difference between them. I can lift the 60 lt Engel with bag and base empty easily. 40lt Engel24kgs, 38 lt Engel 22kgs, Waeco 37lt (not actually 40) 17kg. Engel 40 is 3litres bigger and holds 13 extra cans for size and is not plastic. However there is a lighter plastic version available now I believe

    2) smaller for the same internal capacity.
Look at some of the newer Engels.

    3) battery protection
Is available for Engels as well. People with Waecos I know have had major issues with the Waeco battery protection system, leaving them with a hot fridge as it kicks out when it should not.

    4) better insulated doesn't NEED a bag.
Neither does the Engel. It is an option to protect the Engel and provide additional insulation when in really hot areas which means better battery life.

    5) uses less power than all 12v fridges(40lt)
    WAECO 40lt PowerAve. Power Consumption: 0.87 amps/hr (@ 12V, 5°C interior, 32°C ambient temperature
Engel 40lt DC Power Consumption: Variable from 0.5 to 2.5 AMPS Maximum
The Waeco data states average, no peak or min. The Engel shows peak and min and the average would be very similar.

    6) that stupid gap between the cooling element and the wall of the fridge in the Engel
I agree, but it also allows easy reapair and replacement of the element.

    7) has a dairy section
So do a lot of the new Engels, depends what you want and whatt you buy. Engel also has a two compartment deck option and various dividers.
    8) price, even with an insulation bag the Waeco was cheaper.
Granted and for their price the Waeco is a good alternative, but you get what you pay for .
This was why we chose the Waeco over the Engel, as for the other fridges we looked at, it was price and comparable overall size verses internal capacity.
Glad you love yours and a lot of it is personal choice. Most work well but as with any machine some fail and some are lemons.
I really liked the EverKool but the dealers would not discount there fridges no matter how much we begged
Yep and we all need to stay within our budget. By no means having a go but just clarifying some of the things you mentioned. The ARB fridges seem an awfull lot like Engels.
We are happy with our choice, 5yrs now and still going well, it goes 24/7 not only is it a camping fridge, we use it as a beer fridge at home as well
As said we have had our Engel 13 years and it has probablly run solid for 8 of those 13 years and not missed a beat.
    Cheers
