How do I get from Cooma to Corryong?

    Hi all,

I need to get from Merimbula to Wodonga on Monday. From a look at Google Maps, it looks to be quite hard to get from Cooma to Corryong. G/Maps wants me to go to Kiandra and bush from there... Is the "the alpine way" through Thredbo an option. Will i need snow chains? How long does this drive take?

I will be in a standard 2wd car, and time is the priority (not sightseeing).

Any help please? I'm hitting the road tomorrow morning

Alpine way is fine, but i don't know if chains will be needed or not at the moment, it does take you straight to wadonga though.
May be eaiser to go around though, try to avoid the snowfields altogether.
Alpine way from cooma to wadonga would be around 2.5+hrs on a good run from memory

I was up near Corryong the weekend before last, and the Alpine way was closed. I'd be checking the NSW RTA(? or equiv), visitor info, etc. ...or it's a long way around.

    Oh, that doesn't sound good

I've got a feeling the "long way" around is a very long way!

Through Thredbo is your best bet. I've towed a boat from Jindabyne to Wodonga on the October Long-weekend (next weekend) - no chains but plenty of snow. There is a Ranger station before Thredbo and I can't recall being asked about chains - but then again I've always been in a Defender

This time of year allow four hours. Don't rush it.

Take care on the road mate - I rolled my Defender on it. There's plenty of wildlife and a couple of spots with black ice.

    Cooma to Corryong either
    1. Snowy Mtns Hwy via Kiandra and Cabramurra 188 kms 3hrs 1 min
    2. Alpine Way via Threadbo and Dead Horse Gap 197 kms 3hs 9 mins

Either way has its fair share of twists and turns and possibility of black ice so as mentioned above, take it easy and add a bit to above times.

I would just get to the Hume via Canberra and miss all snow and much of the winding roads - boring but probably quicker and less chance of accidents.

    South-Western / Southern Region

RTA are pretty good at keeping this link updated. It appears Alpine Way is open. Would be my preferred route, stunning scenery, all bitumen. Steep winding descent to Tom Groggin offers great views given the area was razed by bush fires a few years back.

Thanks guys, i don't like the sound of black ice (except the album )

Wife is now saying she doesn't want to go to Wodonga (to visit friends). Fine with me after reading some of the above!!!

Thanks again... Time to hit the road.
