Overlength rules on a trailer.

Hi Guys
Ive looked thru the Main Roads WA website and havent had much luck.
I want to know how far a Dinghy is allowed to LEGALLY overhang a trailer when carried upside down on a rack.If I allow 800mm I can comfortably fit a 4m dinghy on my camper trailer.
In the past I have been stopped twice by Heavy Vehicle Inspectors.First I was carrying steel pipe on a work Landcruiser ute.I was in breach as I had 1500mm rear overhang,they allowed me to shift it forward so it had 1200mm front and rear overhang that was within their rules.Second I was driving the work 6 wheeler with the water tank on,it was built to be 1200mm overhang.This is not suitable in heavy vehicles,60% of the wheelbase is the rule,the tank was 300mm overlength despite the truck having oversize permits.The load wasnt devisible was their argument.
So back to a dinghy on a campertrailer,anybody know the max overhang???

Andrew I would suggest to send an email to Main Roads WA then you will have a written reply. Print a copy and have it on your vehicle just in case that the inspector that can stop you does not what he is talking about

I like to have everithing in B&W just in case

I am not sure of the WA rules, but Qld states that the overall length of vehicle and trailer (including loads) is limited to 19 mts. The over hang rules (once again in Qld) are that the distance from the axle/axles centre to the centre of the tow hitch has to be greater than/equal to the axle centre to the rear most point of the load.
This means if the distance from the axle to the hitch is (for example) 2mts, then that is also the max distance from the axles to the back of your load. So in this case the max you can carry is 4mts.
The load should also be centrered over the length of the trailer and IF the load projects 1200 past the rear of the trailer, then a red flag (or light at night) is also required. Loads are not supposed to project forward over the tow vehicle. All this is usually (tis over here) in a booklet put out by the main roads people

I think there may be a bit of confusion as there are two types of overhang. The first is basically the overhang which is taken from the centre of the trailer to the rear of the trailer itself and must not exceed the front laod space length (which is again centre of the trailer to the front of the front load space not including drawbar) or 3.7m as per building small trailer guide.
The load overhang is what I think you are chasing and that is a bit different.
Maximum load overhang of 1.2m depending on trailer and configuration.

Thanks Craig.Exactly what I was chasing.Unfortunately Im only legal for 210mm longer.To carry a big dinghy I will need to have it close to the back door of the D2 and mounted on rollers or similar so it can be easily slid back to allow door opening.Will put more thought into the rack.
