    The Darling River Run

We are off in three weeks......first stop Walgett.

I am after some recommendations on places we MUST stop at or side trips we MUST do. We will have about 12 days for this trip.

Also any advice - what to watch out for......great spots to stay......anything really.

This is our first real camping trip and the butterflies are in the belly already..

    Cheers
    Caine

I have only done from a bit North of Wilcannia to Menindee Lakes. Coach and Horses campground about 50Km North of the Broken Hill Road is relatively new campground with GAS barbeques and a drop toilet. We loved Copi Hollow camp ground in winter as we got a lakeside camping spot, however the speedboats may annoy in summer. There are many campspots along the lakes but most are dust bowls and there were generator lovers there when we were there. The East side road was rough when we did it last year, and I believe is normally less maintained than the west side road. The National Park at Menindee is worthwhile to see with the old Station and shearing shed and there are camping spots there. Do not try to buy fuel in Wilcannia and if you have to go into the side street. Regards Philip A

Worth having alook at the lift bridges in Brewarrina, Bourke and Wilcannia. Also Bourke Weir. Do some research on the early history of the paddlesteamers on the Darling before you head off.
Wilcannia is not as bad as it's reputation, common sense is all that is required, ie if there is a riot happening don't stop there.
The underground Motel at White cliffs may be worth a visit but beware the cost of the meals, we stayed there a couple of months ago and the Accom was $150 and the food was $120. (there's not many other places to eat in White Cliffs )

I did all those roads 20 years ago in a Falcon Panel Van...

I may have given the wrong impression about Wilcannia. I have spent quite a bit of time there over years and have never encountered any trouble. I have heard reports of problems with public drunkenness etc but as I said common sense is all that is required. I would not specifically rule out shopping or buying fuel there if it was necessary, however if I was going from Cobar to Broken Hill I probably would drive straight through. Hope that clarifies things for you.

Stopped for lunch at Wilcannia July this year in the park by the river.Quiet as a mouse on a Sunday.Only locals visible all seemed to have a line in the river seeking lunch.Fascinating history ,splendid old buildings.
Don't just charge through it's well worth a good look around. The park looks like there was still some civic pride not too long ago.Same old problem -isolation no jobsetc, etc

whilst not doing the full run we found bourke to be nice and stayed in the van park outside of town near where the paddleboat jandra ties up.
also not sure if open but the "back of bourke" info centre looked interesting, they were still building it when we were there a few years back.

also liked the camping at menindi lakes, wonder if there is any water in them these days?. there were some nice camps on the river if i remember correctly.

have a good trip and look forward to the photo's.
    cheers
