Must See Places?
Hi Everyone,
Well we have started the first step of planning our big trip next year, I've
bought a laminated map of Australia and we are marking the places we want to go to! A small step I know but can't help getting excited already.
I was wondering what places you have visited that you would label a must see place in Australia? Unfortunately we aren't planning to go to WA or TAS in this trip but everything else is fair game.
We have 3 kids 8,6 & 3 so kid friendly places would also be a great help. Any caravan parks or camp sites that are highly recommended would be great too.
We will be towing a large caravan and planning to be away for 14 weeks.
Thank you for your help.

Hmm!
Are you into beach things like fishing, surfing?
Do you like bush things like walking, exploring?
Do you like/hate crowds?
Can you handle city traffic like Sydney, or just freak out at the thought of multi lane tollways?
Do you like remote places, can you camp where there is not a light/sound/person for many km, or are you a social type and like caravan parks?
Will your van handle rough dirt roads?
Would the family like bush camps, wash from a bucket, dig a hole for toileting?
Some idea of your family's thoughts on that would give the forum an idea of what to suggest.
cheers

Thanks austastar for the quick reply.
We are beach people and normally go coastal for our holidays.
But in saying that we are planning to do more inland routes for the southern and central part and come back down the coast from FNQ.
In answer to the other questions:
- Just started to get into bush things but limited in walking with a 3 year old.
- Hate crowds, but expecting that to be part of the trip.
- Can handle city traffic.
- A few remote places would be great. Our van can probably go 3 days away from power/water.
- Our van could handle dirt roads but nothing too serious.
- Family would be happy experience bush camping.
As a rough idea at the moment we are planning to go from Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Alice Springs, Darwin, Cairns and back the coast down to Brisbane.

First thing I'd suggest is to consider reversing your proposed route so that you are up north during winter and south for spring/summer - much more comfortable weatherwise.

Yep, reverse the trip, otherwise places like Grampians, Great Ocean Rd, Flinders Ranges will be in the middle of winter, but shouldn't be too hot by the time you get there at the end of your trip.

Good point. Don't think too much about the weather in Brisbane!

When your heading past Newcastle be sure to drop by Stockton Beach for a drive, i dont think theres anything quite like it on this side of Australia, I could even give you a guided tour
Theres also several Caravan parks located nearby, the one in the Stockton township is quite nice, very close to the beach(20m from the water pretty much) its also a short ferry ride to Newcastle if you want to check it out.

This is a bit left field as you will have thought of the "big" ones like Flinders Ranges, Uluru etc.
Lake Hindmarsh in Victoria (NW) is currently filling up with water. This is the first time since the early 90's that it has had water. Whilst normally very dry and arrid this part of Victoria (Mallee) can be a paradise after a few inches of water. Lake Hindmarsh is the biggest natural freshwater lake in Victoria.
Whilst your there Wyperfeld National Park is very pretty too.
It will be a haven for wildlife with the recent rains and well worth a night or two - I am planning to head up for a gander soon.
