LC200 using 5 litres of oil per 10000 kms

Whilst reading through other forums about inherent problems of other marques in this case a Toyo LC200 , the dealers have told this guy that the issue should settle at around 150,000kms

I also tow a small caravan and it won't change out of 4th gear on the highway. Why fit them with a 6 speed box if they don't have the power to drive it.
The dealer's answer was that the new LC is not designed to be taken off road or to tow!
After owing 6 Patrol and never had any dramas whatsoever, I know what I will be buying next time.

    and I love this response

As for towing, any car is going to work towing a caravan, and labouring the motor by allowing the gearbox to stay in top is asking it to overheat. Diesels like to breath and mashing the accelerator while towing and labouring the motor just pours in fuel that won't get burnt by the combustion cycle and will continue burning as it goes past the valves and turbo.
So let me get this straight (and i'm a toyota man saying this), you had a look at a 200 series, inspected the whole package ( i know i would if buying 80 grand plus worth of vehicle) and DIDN'T ask the towing specs or do a bit of reasearch on vehicle specs or componentry? I can tell just by a quick glance that the 200 is a toorak tourer heap of crap. I'm guessing that you just got glamoured by the 4.5V8 diesel.
I know that if i was going to buy a vehicle that does off road work and touring/towing it's either going to be a 70series of any vintage or a patrol with the 4.2TD.
I don't really know what the answer is for you. I don't know why you're doing front diffs, they're not great, but for normal driving they should be fine, there's plenty of smaller diffs getting about in IFS front vehicles that are potting about just great. Put a decent exhaust system on the car from the turbo back and you may find the extra HP you get may help with the gear it likes to sit in.

yup, oil issues are over at 150,000km, and at 160,000km you've gotta blow ~$10k on the 160k service..... new injector pump, lines, injectors, etc

This is the kind of thing that really worries me about modern 4wd's. And im not just referring to the toyo, but any make. Seems to me that a manufaturers idea of 4wd is a dirt road in which ones driveway is based on! Now the D3 and D4 have a good reputation so far... lets hope LR dont go soft in the coming years.

Puts new meaning to the term OILER..
In all fairness to the bloke who bought it , Overlander mag did a tow test with the LC 200, D3, 3l patrol and jeep, and their view the LC200 won hands down, especially for a large van.He may have read that, gone yeh twin turbo v8 but it has not been the case.
Think the dealers response was **** poor, maybe toyota is now in the oil business and needs some more sales.

All I can say is for those $$$$ glad it that bought it

    Cheers Ean

And they joke about LR leaking oil.
Toyos just burn it at a greater rate

As explained to me by the mechanic at Mataranka, the problem is that some ran out of oil before the first service.

Now that must have prompted an interesting warranty argument.

I thought the oil consumption issue was found to be a problem with the turbos.

The thing that gets me is how good tojo are at not letting these things get out.The 200 series had major tailshaft issues as well but you never hear about them, they have the best PR people there is. Pat

To be fair to Toyota, they seem to work hard to get a fix out for teething problems on new models. The oil consumption issue mentioned here has been fixed, as has the tailshaft 'clunk' and 6th gear shift point. Don't know if they've sorted the dust problem yet.

In contrast, LR pass off many faults as 'characteristcs', even though they weren't there when the car was new, or they just swap the offending parts for more of the same, faulty, design. Ok while in warranty....
