Bridgestone to shut tyre plant, cut 600 jobs
    October 23, 2009 - 2:54PM

Bridgestone Australia is to close its tyre manufacturing plant in Adelaide with the loss of 600 jobs.
The company said on Friday it would also close a tyre production plant in Christchurch, New Zealand with the loss of 275 jobs.
The company said it could no longer commercially justify the continued operation of the two facilities.
''As the last tyre manufacturer in Australia and New Zealand, we have worked hard over many years to avoid today's decision,'' senior executive director Andrew Moffatt said in a statement.
Bridgestone said all employees at both plants would receive their full entitlements.
The Adelaide plant will close by the end of April, 2010, with Christchurch to close by the end of 2009.
In the second quarter, Bridgestone tumbled to an operating loss, hit by the economic slump and a stronger yen, but it raised its full-year outlook thanks to cost cuts.

Yes and all of us have been paying 25% import duty on tyres to support Bridgestone.

I wonder how much per job that has totalled?

So maybe now we can look forward to cheaper tyres as for sure one of the importers will now challenge the duty.

They may challenge the 25%, so their profit will go up.

I am a bit behind the times. Apparently it is now 10%. But still that should mean at least 10% drop in tyre prices.

I think the tyre industry is pretty competitive for standard sizes but 4WD tyres may be different.

I note BFG prices here are far higher than the USA , yet we have a free trade agreement so they should come in duty free.

BFG 245.75x16 ATs are USD153 at Tire Rack but that does not include fitting and balancing or freight.
But I wouldn't mind paying A$166 plus freight and fitting in OZ.!!!!!
General Grabber AT2 are USD 122

Yea they will drop the 25% duty and replace it with 40% in hidden taxes.
