How do you insure your landy's in Australia???

    Guys,
How much would you expect to have to pay to insure my fully kitted out 2006 Defender 110 fully comp (Uk model, imported as a Personal Import, now fully NSW complient)?

The big players wont touch it because its not listed on there computers - probably because its an import and you couldnt buy a 2006 Defender 110 here.

My next problem has come about when they ask me if its modified or has accessories... I say yes and tell them how. Next question they ask is replacemement value... This is where the big problem lies (I think). Quite a few of you guys have seen my car and know what its like... But mine cant be the only tidy 110 around here....

After A LOT of ringing around (Thanks Derek for the pointers) I have managed to get an agreed settlement value, fully comp with a complete declared modification list...

BUT.... At a cost of $1900!!! Oh and that include 7 years No Claims Bonus transferred from the UK! The same insurance on the same vehicle in the UK cost me approx $800. And I thought Britain was a rip off country!

Before anyone suggests Shannon's... they arent interested in my "Enthusiast car" because they say its worth too much!!!

...sorry if this turned into a rant.... Im all calm again now
    Regards,
    Jon

insurance over here is the biggest rort i've found since moving here ( ex NZ ), back there i had my Discovery valued at $27k, full comp insurance for $210 per year with NZ's biggest car insurer, here i've just had a quote for one of my work vans, 'agreed' value of 13k at $1900 per year from NRMA!..Damn near fell off my chair, ended up with AAMI at $800, same value, no idea how they can be so far away from each other in pricing.
Anyway, i've found AAMI the best of a bad bunch, i've got 8 vehicles all with them now.

    good luck,

    Ray

Try Lumleys -they were the only ones who would realisticly consider insuring my 101. Others were happy to insure but only much less than the truck was worth - indeed silly money. They were also prepared to negotiate on the "non-negotiable" items such as 'lockable garage'.

Also their premiums were very good with wreck retention if the worse ever happened.

Not sure what you mean by 2006 110s weren't available here???

As you found, most insurance companies won't want to know you if the accessories are worth more than 1/3 the value of the vehicle. Most also don't like modified vehicles. Just having a maxi-drive locker on my IIA made it uninsurable.

    My personal view:
The extra premium you pay will add up to the cost of the accessories rather quickly.
The only way you will lose out is if the vehicle is stolen and the accessories stripped. Otherwise, if the vehicle is in an accident, or is stolen and recovered intact, you can buy back the wreck from the insurance (or remove the accessories first before you give it to the insurance ).

When I last shopped around, DGA insurance were the best wrt modifications and 4x4s. There are also the import specialists like just car, but they are $$$.

    Jon,
You may try TCIS, but need to affiliated with the national 4WD body (can be via state, regional etc) they may be usefull considering that you may be traveling in remote areas. On that point some may not insure for places like the Cape etc. We had a vehicle return from there whom was advised of this and sure enough they did not recognise the development roads. I believe it was one of the insurers mentioned earlier in this thread. So ask the questions and tell them where you are going.

Hope you don't need the Ins,

    Hi Gary,
Lumleys is the one that has given me the most comprehenisve price. Another company (cant remember the name at the moment) had an exclusion list a mile long!

You didn't mention that it was a dual cab ute...

The fact that it is technically an "import" may be the main issue? I helped a student of mine from OS insure an import Terrano she bought here. It is 99.99% the same as a pathfinder, which was released here.

A pathfinder would have been $200 full comp. Most of the major insurers would not touch an import. Just Car were one of the few but wanted over $1k/yr on a vehicle worth $4k!!!

    Did you try DGA???

What happens to the price if you tell them it is a (non-import) wagon???

I once saw a sticker on an old Series Landy.
    INSURED BY SMITH AND WESSON
Try SGIO.I have been insured with them for a LONG time.
I suggested them to a member here a couple of weeks ago who had the run around being refused any insurance on a Ser3 with a holden 6.Much to his surprise they accepted it.
When we bought RichardKs Rangie,I insured it with the 4.6,and air lockers bullbar etc.Once again no problem. They cover for loss on a beach too,as long as its above high tide.

I am with TCIS and i have a fairly modded disco td5 for my agreed value i pay just on 1k per year but i am insured in any geograhical part of oz for some reason my car is on a boat in aust waters and the boat sinks my car is insured but there is no point of insuring your truck unless you have all the engineering certificates which makes your pride and joy road worthy cause they will end up shafting you a good thing with tcis is if i go through a huge bog hole and drown her i will get insured for it
    cheers kelvin
