How to move a motorbike backwards up a slope...

Well, I once lived on the 3rd floor and the staircase was rather small and tight. Too tight as I found out when I drove (sic!!!) my BMW R100 up to about the 2nd floor. Then I got stuck... After annoying all the neighbours by giving more throttle (without anything happening other than filling the air with (per?)fumes) I admitted defeat and decided to call in a few mates, with whose assistance we finally succeeded to move the bike manually up into my living room where I then was able to do an engine overhaul.

Side note: my neighbours got upset when I test-started the beast, still in the living room, after reassembly some weeks later (it was about 3am, I have to admit:twisted:). Some mates were helping me to move it downstairs afterwards.

So, my advice: get some assistance to get your bike out, makes things much easier.

Both my bikes are over 250kg i dont get into that situation any more:angel: i reverse down the hill and park so i can drive out but have used the centre stand to turn round before but its still hard with bikes that are 3x my weight:cool:

Only other suggestion I would have is a 38 point turn - bit like a Land Rover....:angel:

Try dissembling the bike, then turning all the parts around 180 degrees before reassembling it facing the direction you want to go. This is a fail safe method, albeit labour intensive, so don't try it at roundabouts or T intersections
Another tip: Don't attempt this method while drinking, as the cops are likely to pull you over just as you finish.

Not much you can do with a bike that big once you are in such a situation without assistance.

I think you would be better trying to avoid any such situation where you need to try and reverse.

As mentioned before, if a situation is unavoidable, you need to learn to roll backwards down the slope so that you can just take off forwards.

Done this plenty of times on my cbr900 (200kg bike). Best method to ride out rather than push out :D

Rolling backwards down a hill can also present problems. Many years ago I rode a large road bike up a very steep drive & parked at the top, where it levelled out. When I went to roll back down, the front wheel just locked up & dragged:eek:. I couldn't get my foot off the ground to apply the rear brakes, so made a very rapid & scary descent to the bottom.

Should have been in low gear with the clutch disengaged.
