    Summertime, snakes & dogs

Just a warning to all our mates in the "country"......

In the past few weeks, two of our close friends have had their dogs bitten by snakes - thankfully only by black snakes - but it has cost quite a lot at the Vets for the antivenene etc.

Thankfully one has recovered fully...the other, which was only bitten tonight, is still in Intensive Care, on a drip...(fingers crossed).

When I said "country" at the beginning of the post..both families live only 30ks from Sydney CBD... so keep a watchful eye out for man's best friend.

I suppose the snakes are coming in looking for water...it's been so dry here in the past few weeks.

You want to live up here and own a Pointer... you can't stop a pointer from hunting when it's at home by itself

So far she's killed two snakes (last year), thankfully only whip snakes, but the damed things look almost identical to browns. So far none this year, only lizards a few birds (including one Ibis).

The Ibis is a real pest around here...so it's not a great loss.

A happy end to this... our friends foxy, Jasmine, is back home. She's OK after the snake bite, but has to be carefully watched for a few weeks just in case of kidney problems.

Had two Taipans in the backyard so far this season. Still early days too.
We dont venture out at night without the lantern.
Blacks are a dime a dozen, we just walk around them.

In Australia around 3000 people are bitten by snakes each year, but only about 300 need any treatment [always call an Ambulance though just in case] and only around five die each year from snake bite. Most of those who die, die because they did something silly. for example, one man got bitten by a brown snake and drove himself to hospital. He died 20 minutes after getting to hospital. If he had applied the correct First Aid and rang, and waited for an Ambulance he probably would have survived that bite.

Hope all know the correct First Aid for a snake bite. If not find out the correct recommended First Aid, and do a CPR course at the same time. I have seen Brown Snakes in the city, so never venturing into the bush does not mean you are safe, if you just use your Land Rover is just for picking up the Kids from School and for shopping.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
