Hi,
Take a look at VSB bulletin #10 at:
Vehicle Standards Bulletins
As far as I know, BEFORE sending the thing from NZ to Oz you have to obtain a permit, and then you have 6 months to register it. There are some time constraints in order to import it under a personal-import scheme (it is supposed that you have been using the car in NZ several months before you move). I know what applies for Europe, but some special (and more favorable) rules for NZ may apply.
On the other hand, there are some issues regarding the seats and anchor points for child seats... unless you register it as a historic vehicle (older than 30, but you can not use the whole year and need to carry a log-book with the car). But it is better that you read the whole document an make your own conclusions, don't want to add confusion.
Cheers,
Carlos

G'day Sapfactor
I am presuming that you intend to import this vehicle (your own vehicle) to Australia, as stated you would need an import permit, NZ authorities should be able to guide you on that, it will need to be pressure cleaned before leaving with paperwork stating how, when, where, again NZ authorities can advise, (Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service AQIS are VERY thorough and Pedantic), it would depend on which State that you intend to import into as to what are the state's registration requirements, if it is a Series 2 (pre 1961) it was built before Australian ADR's (Aust Design Rules) and therefore will not have a compliance plate, your NZ registeration papers will(should) have the year of manufacture on it, Vehicles built before 1966 did not require seatbelts as law, but if fitted they have to comply with Aust regulations (if you have belts in it, there could be a label sewn in near the bolt fixings that states Aust/NZ compliance code****)
It might be worth contacting by PM, Medic455 as he imported his Series 2a SWB ex military Landy and Military 2 wheel 1/2 ton trailer into Queensland a few years ago.
Hope this is of some help.
cheers
