    Warranty

Are used car dealers required to supply a warranty with a vehicle? When looking at used Land Rovers, I noticed a few said on the ad in the windscreen that warranty was available, implying that you had to pay extra for it, as it did not say included. I have never bought a used car from a dealer before, so don't know much.

In vic I think it is over a certain kays (I think 175,000) and less that a certain value (used to be $5000) no used car warranty is required.

I imagine they are trying to flog an aftermarket warranty - danger-warning will robinson!

This is the situation in NSW.

    Used car statutory warranty
Applies to all dealer-sold passenger cars with less than 160,000km and under 10 years old and not exceeding the luxury car tax threshold. The warranty is valid for three months or 5,000km from date of purchase. This warranty will cover most items on a car relating to safety, reliability and roadworthiness.

If you need the info for another state, do a search for used car warranty and you should find what you need to know.

This should tell you about Victoria. It seems to be the same.

My 2004 D2a with 120k was $22k ... no warranty. Purchased from a licenced motor dealer ... wholesale.

Just as this dealer would sell the car to a car yard, there's no warranty given or implied with a wholesale transaction.

He did however repair a turbo oil leak, and a failed front tail shaft at my insistance being that the vehicle wasn't safe to drive in it's current condition.

You need to visit the Consumer Affairs website applicable to your state, rules vary.
In WA 4x4 once meant no warranty, nowdays SUV style(ie passenger 4x4s) do get a statuary warranty.
There are clauses for no warranty, like excessive kms.
They are usually pretty short so if its got warranty pay for a reputable Landy specialist to inspect long before it expires.
Paid warranty, not worth the paper they are written on.
