    Looking for a bolt!! strange I know

    As the title says looking for a bolt...does anyone know where we can get our hands on the bolt with specs below.

    7/16th UNF 4.5 inches long..(high-tensile)

    We have a mower that needed a new clutch...we got the warner clutch fom the states all good except Ian couldn't find a blot to fit he went to the bolt shop near work and also asked a few people, including the guy at the mower shop near our house everyone said no.

    anyway Ian improvised, using a slightly longer bolt and packing out with washers..needless to say when he got the mower cutting the mower cut for about 10 meters then something gave, we think it may of been the bolt (he wasn't sure it was high tensil) causing something to go wrong with the clutch the belt shredded and the drive pulley broke!!


    Got a new pulley...all good I have been asking Ian for days has he found a bolt and tonight he informs me he has ordered one (but again its not the right size but this time its high-tensil) So I thought I would come and ask here as we nearly lost a 300 clutch and broke a few other things so i would really like to fit the right bolt to be honest even if it wasn't really the bolt at fault (which we are not entirely sure of).
    Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

    blackwoods is your friend so are most reputable fixture suppliers.

    to confirm its a high tensile bolt have a look at the head and it will have 6 small lines that radiate out on the face of the head.

    roughly

    no lines is about equal to a grade 6 metric bolt (but no guarantees)
    3 lines is equal to a grade 8 bolt (stamped 8.8) and is a standard tensile bolt
    6 lines is equal to a grade 10 bolt (stamped 10.9) and is a high tensile bolt

    Only price they have is for a 100 of them

    I know of good bolt suppliers in NT, QLD and Victoria but don't know Sydney.

    I think some shear bolts are mild steel, If I remember correctly mild steel has a greater shear pressure than High tensile. I think high tensile are stronger when stretched for want of a better description. If this isnt right I hope someone will correct me

    A lot of people have these sort of misconceptions but they are just that.

    Bush65 and Kiwibacon are the experts, but, as a rule of thumb, shear strength is ~ 2/3 tensile strength.
