1999 Land Rover Discovery Series 1?

G'day have found a Land Rover Series 1 1999 Model I really like, was wondering if anyone could help me with the Good, the bad and the ugly things with this model please as I want to buy it anyway. The motor has been rebuilt and a reco turbo been installed. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Wow S1! 99 model?
Must be one of the very last.

I suggest you get it very well checked by someone that knows Landies.

Take it for a ride, what do you think?

How many K's and does it have a service history?

Is everything working and why was it rebuild, what was done too, full motor top and bottom or just the head and turbo?

Whats interior like and what extras if any.

How much money, over $10k than it better be good.

Air con and all electrics working?

Drive a few others to give you a guide as to what others drive.
They can be a very reliable easy to live with.

I love mine, '97 model but basically same.

Check the build plate, I thought the S1 Disco was superceded in '98.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

I agree, I thought late 98 was the last of the D1's. Are they claiming it is a 99 model because it was first registered in 99 ??

My D1 was a late '98 build, but a '99 compliance plate & that is what most people, private & dealers use as the year model.

My Tdi Defender is a 99 Compliance plate but has a "WA" VIN which places it in the last run of that model built in 98. AFAIK the Tdi Disco's could easily be the same. Best to go off both the VIN and compliance plate for a full picture.

I am sure that Stooge's white Disco is 1999 model.

Check for rust. Much more expensive to fix. (Rear floor of wagon - see if you can pry up the carpet a bit) Check chassis for rust (use a small hammer or similar to give it a gentle tap - listen/feel for the rust. Rust kills discos - mechanicals can be repaired - albeit with $$$

As big guy said get someone to give it a once over if you don't know Land ROvers . A couple of hundred spent now may save you buying a money pit.

I bought a 98 D1 4 years back and ended up spending $4 K on it (admittedly a V8) in the first year But much of that was items that do wear out (new springs, tyres, shockers, a couple of abs sensors, other bits an pieces). Spent bugger all since so happy now.

Check that the ABS light (Between Speedo and Tacho) comes on when you turn the ignition on and the extinguishes itself after you drive off - I got caught by this. If you have a fault with the ABS some rip off merchants will remove the globe hiding the fact that the warning light is on.

Look for service history as a good service history means alot.

If you are suss - walk away - There a HEAPS of D1s out there (admittedly not so many so young) but a 96 or 97 model may be just as good if well loved.

Also its a buyers market for D1s so offer low - subtracting the price of all the faults from the price advertised.

IMHO - any Disco 1 over 10 grand needs to be in tip top condition.

When I got my Defe have the log books with all the services done by 2 LR dealers in Vic.
I found out in the hard way that not a single job have been done on it

Sleepy mentioned very good points and I would add that perhaps it is a good idea to take the Disco to a mecanic that you trust to inspect it.

All in all the Discos Tdi are great vehicles and if you look after them it will be reliable and cheap to run.

    Good luck
