    td5 fuel filters

How many fuel filters are there on a td5 defender, i,ve changed the main fuel filter and its feeling sluggish still, is there an inline filter i should be changing or a fine gauze filter in the fuel pump that should be checked. The defender has now got 150k on the clock if that helps.

There is a coarse gauze filter on the fuel pump which has been known to block up (usually with some sort of black crud) and cause the pump to work overtime, resulting in reduced output.
As access to the pump requires dropping the fuel tank (unless you have cut an access hole in the rear floor - see Mulgo's banner ad on this site) most people replace the pump once it gets to this stage, although I have heard of someone who cleaned it up and reused it - not sure how long ot lasted after that though.

A search on Td5 fuel pumps should come up with plenty of info.

    Hold up...

Before dropping tanks, cutting holes etc...

Get a pressure gauge and fit it on the fuel regulator.. If you're getting 4 bar of fuel pressure I'd check MAF etc... If not 4bar then Fuel Reg or fuel pump it is.

There is also a gauze filter on the fuel inlet in the head, behing the fuel pressure regulator. Its not something you would want to change unless you were sure it was an issue though:

18 months and still going strong in my case. If this is tha problem though you fuel pump will probably be making excess noise.
