Thread: Garmin Topo V3

Hi John,
I bought v.3 in the last week or so. It's a waste of money! It has insufficient geographical names and the 20m contours are inadequate for bushwalking (perhaps with the exception of alpine areas.

I find the Geoscience Australia 250k and 1M maps better for general planning and (in NSW) digital versions of of the Land and Property Information (LPI) topographic maps much to be preferred.

I have yet to see if I can download selected areas of these maps to my Garmin.

Thanks for the feedback on V3 Bushwanderer..
I had downloaded it,but hadnt put it on my 60CSx(have a Mac-need windoze for it to do anything).
Think Ill stay with my shonky maps for the time being then.

I had guessed as much but had read some good positive, probably from people who do not demand as much out of a map as I may. I will for now stick with getting out the paper maps and use the GPS for direction finding etc more than mapping. Seems to be an area where the government office could do something useful. I see that in NZ all you have to do is get a disc drive to their lands office and they will give you a free digital topo of NZ.

Would be great if you could get that service here even if it is in JPG . As a guess from when I scan my own 1:25 000 topo maps you could do the whole of australia in that scale for about 70G or less without loosing any detail. The 1:250 000 that you can get for free just don't do it for me.

I agree that the 250k maps are limiting, but they have their place.

A little while back GA released a digital 100k series, but they had problems and were withdrawn. Hopefully, they'll be re-released shortly.

LPI also publish a digital set of their topo maps. You may find them useful, but converting raster maps would be a pain.

This is in regard to Garmin V3 topo not OZ topo V3?
I'm interested in the latter, looks a great improvement over V2.1

Has anyone used the oztopo maps and how do they compare with others.
Am thinking of buying the oztopo
Have used the shonky maps,but they dont give you enough detail when out in the playing along the tracks.

I just bought V3 today.
Not sure about which GPS i will run it on yet, considering the Nuvi 500.
