    Tablet GPS in Defenders

    Hi All

    In the past, some traditional GPS receivers have suffered reception issues in Defenders due to the near vertical windscreen and poor satellite reception. I've had to use external GPS antennas in the past to compensate.

    For those Defender owners out there who are now running tablet based GPS receivers (eg Samsung Galaxy etc), how are you going with GPS reception, especially in heavily wooded situations ?

    I'd like to hear experiences from Defender owners.

    I'm currently just running an android Samsung Galaxy S, using inbuild GPS only. Sygic is used for on-road navigation, and AlpineQuest for off-road stuff. The GPS can lose signal in heavily wooded valleys, but otherwise performs acceptable.

    I plan on getting a bluetooth GPS receiver, though, for more reliability. Have used several BT receivers in the past on a few different phones, with good success.

    I plan on upgrading to a tablet in a while, which will do duty in the Defender as well, so having an external BT receiver will mean I don't have to look for a GPS-enabled tablet... (which will be Android).

    I'm not using a tablet but a netbook with remote bluetooth GPS - it has basically performed faultless sitting with the GPSr where the ashtray is on the dash.
    I believe though the newer GPSr should be even better, I have a garmin nuvi that will receive (and give directions) from the glovebox in my work hilux.

    Hi,
    I run a Garmin Nuvi on the windscreen, a laptop from a puck on the dash, but I get the best performance from a puck gps in a Jacar grey plastic box on the tray headboard feeding to a data logger.

    Ipad

    I run A Ipad 2 in a ram mount off the passenger front right seat bolt it works a treat even able to use the in built camera as i drive to record tracks
    no problems with glare or reception.

    I am running a car pc with 10.4" touchscreen all built into the dash. There is a complete build in Members Rigs.

    It runs Windows XP with Centrafuse controlling on road navigation, radio with all music stored on the hard drive. Engine diagnostics and Oziexplorer are also accessed through Centrafuse and the screen links with the rear view camera.

    Will also handle phone integration but not sure if I will be bothered as it is good to get away from mobiles sometimes

    Have not had any trouble with the GPS despite the verticle windcreen.
