My new fave iPad app.....
As some of you are aware, I was using the program MapSphere with a 10" Dell Mini laptop for track recording and mapping software in the Disco.
Notice the word WAS......
I've recently bought an iPad 3 (non-3g, wifi only), and the money I saved bought a BadElf GPS plugin unit for it. Works a dream! And I can run the iPad from the 12v socket with it plugged in, so no battery drain, and only one plug!
I'm a HUGE fan of the MapSphere software, but they unfortunately don't do an iOS version, nor intend to according to their support team.
So I rumaged around EVERYWHERE and found the nearest I could - MotionX-GPS HD. There's a version for iPad and iPhone, and at the time of writing is only $1.99 from the AppStore.
This works almost exactly like MapSphere in that you can pre-download satellite imagery from Bing (Google not supported) at multiple view levels of the area you wish to navigate, so they are available off-line when out and about, recording your driven track in real time. Waypoints and more can also be added. Track files from other platforms, programs, and devices can also be installed and viewed without need for conversion. Just drag and drop via iTunes.
Have stuck a number of pics up on Picasaweb if any one wants a nosey.
Feel free to ask questions, I've had a good play with this set up now and confirm it works exceptionally well.
ps. Those screenshots are my own, not from the developers. Hopefully you can see the accuracy of the tracks/roads I took overlaid on the roads in the satellite images.
Cheers.
