Thread: Mud Maps

If you need electronic maps, then go for it.
I have it on my iPad and phone and it works well, but it's not a replacement for a purpose built GPS such as Garmin or similar with all kinds of GPS & tracking features.
They had an option to try it out for $3, is that option not available anymore? (You can always send them an email, they are a great bunch of guys and a pleasure to deal with - yes Ausies, based in Vic)

I am new to the 4wd scene. I have used Garmin gps units on my mountain bike to log my rides but I have no idea what the units designed for 4wding offer. Can you plan a route and have it tell you to turn left in 100 m like they do on the road or are you just plotting your position on a map like to bike units.

There are no turn by turn announcements for off road maps.
And I have the latest Mud Maps,and even the 25k maps,leave a lot to be desired.
They have a lot of tracks missing that are on other maps of similar type.

I have Mud Maps and agree that it leaves a lot to be desired. The so called 25k topo maps are street maps with topo lines and pretty useless out on the fire trails. I've found Memory Map to be the best behaved on my ipad but the 25k maps are expensive. I like Memory Maps computer planning application where I can draw my intended route with the mouse on my computer then upload it to the ipad.

I agree with Mike entirely,Memory map with the 25K maps,look very nice on an ipad,and have a lot more detail than Mud Map.The NSW maps are also the latest 2012 release,so are up to date.And memory map is very easy to use,when out in the field.

I have Mud Maps and HEMA on my iPad3.

After this trip to Cape York I found HEMA to be great, used it all the time. Mud Maps of the other hand were virtually useless.

The 25k Aus Topo has good detail but..... To see any detail you must zoom in so far you loose any perspective on where you are or what the track ahead will bring, if you start to zoom out all detail of tracks etc disappears and you are left on a green page with a couple of Topo lines that really mean nothing.

Yep. As a fellow Mud Map owner (iPhone version) I must say I'm a bit underwhelmed. It's almost a great app. The zoom out issue makes it completely useless for anything serious. I won mine so I can't whine too much I guess!

Another gripe is the number of times they have changed the purchase / subscription method for the once included Smart Topo maps. :-/ I might revisit Memory Map on iPad as it was good last time I used it.
