    I Need a New GPS

I am in the market for a new GPS and am having problems finding one that meets all my requirements.

    1. Must have auto on when ignition is turned on
    2. Must have auto off when power is removed
    3. Must have decent screen brilliance
    4. Must have Aussie street navigation with cost effective updates
    5. Must have the ability to have offroad system - eg hema maps/oziexplorer
    6. Ideal screen size is 6"
    7. Must have AV in.
    8. Cost effective

Any one know of a GPS that can do all this??

I haven't found anything as yet.

    Thanks

AFAIK unless you go for a eBay China copy you are limited to Navman if you want the av input.
If you can live without the av input I would recommend either gamin or Tom Tom each have their own little quirks but if you did stick to the main 3 you will generally have no issues and you will find most of them will come with lifetime map updates now. If not I can almost guarantee there will be something in a Father's Day sale.

A quick google I found this
    Navman

But go into somewhere like dick smith or jbhifi and have a play and pick the one you like using.

Yes the hema looks very very good the only reason I haven't taken the plunge yet is no one can give me a straight answer on how much updates cost

But would definitely suit your needs

I thought I needed a new one too but revived the 7" cheapie by fitting an external battery charger after replacing the battery without any improvement. The smart LIPO charger also has a mini USB socket and only cost $1.

    Thanks for those comments.

AV is a must and in my experience (I have had two in the past) the Chinese ones do not have auto on and when they auto off you then have to reset the GPS receiver as it does not come back on with the rest of the GPS.

There is a nice Garmin (I have a basic version now) that is sold in the US that meets most of my requirements but it is expensive and I would also have to by Garmin Aust maps that are also very expensive.

I have been through the local stores like JB and Dick Smith but they have nothing suitable.

    Thanks

AULRO Subscriber Offer - cheap on-road/off-road GPS units
Yes mine is/was still going. It stopped showing the time so would not darken at night and then the battery died so I have Iphone battery to go in but I accidently pulled some wiring off when I separated the case so not sure if I can get it back together. The power socket also came away from the circuit board early in the piece as it could not handle the up and down movement of the power cord when offroad but I was able to get it repaired.

You can still buy these GPS from DealExtreme.

I also have another 7" DealExtreme GPS but the battery died and again the power socket has come away from the circuit board.

Also have a $89 Garmin and it is great - I have the topo maps for it and seems to be pretty good overall but no AV in for a reversing camera.

It is from the pros and cons of these GPSs that I came up with my wish list above.
