I've been thinking about your setup. It depends on how much you want to spend. There are two setups that I would recommend and I have experience with both.

1. Ipad (but don't get a mini Ipad as they are too small to use). I can't supply Ipads
Hema App off the Apps store - check the price as there was a recent special
Bad Elf GPS Pro $189. The Pro is a tracker and will bluetooth to up to five devices. I would recommend it over the 1008 ($135.00) as the 1008 is too small and easy to lose and is not a tracker nor transmitter
Ram Mount that bolts to your front passenger seat mount $88.00
Postage $16.50

2. Toughbook - the cheapest is the CF-53 Panasonic Official Panasonic Toughbook 53 Rugged Laptop but will set you back $2400 (I got the previous model six months ago for $1400)
Garmin GPS 16X HVS $135 (https://www.ja-gps.com.au/Garmin/gps16x-hvs-oem/ Garmin's website won't open for some reason so have a look at the opposition.

I have a Samsung 8" (not a phone) , built in gps is brilliant.
With OziExplorer and a heap of maps it does all I need.
A ram mount on the dash holds it steady, and power comes from a usb supply wired to the aux battery side of one of drivesafe's SC80s.

I have the old Garmin GPS V with a USB interface data cable, if mated to a tablet or laptop could this setup be used as a navigation system?

What is needed to make it work?

Not sure of your garmin model, but if you can get the settings to give you NMEA mode, you can feed this to a laptop usb port and OziExplorer can use the data stream to position your maps on the laptop screen.
We ran like this for years until I bought a tablet.

Bought this Nexus 7 for $120 as a factory refurbished - 12 mths warranty. Has a built-in GPS receiver. Just tossing up between mud maps and hema for it, then to sort out a mount for it. Tested it with a free GPS app and seems to go OK.

according to the tech. details, it supports the NMEA 0183 with 4800 Baud, GARMIN, GARMIN DGPS, NMEA 0183 V2.30, Text out, RTCM IN, RTCM/NMEA and RTCM/TEXT

I've used both explore oz and mud maps... On an iPhone and now an iPad ( not
T shure of mud map on other phone/tablets but explore oz workers with palm pilot, and other systems.... Frankly not using explor oz except in v
Camp and planing....while mud map is in the car every time I leave the house( one advantage with exp oz is that you can get the 25000 to one maps free of geoscience website......also you can scan and run paper maps on ozx

I cant find 1:25000 topos for free on geoscience site- what page are they on?
