I have had a very good run out of my Garmin C320, and would defenantly recomend this to be the best and easiest to use nav on the market in that price range.

Personally I think a good map is better along witha decent compass. For city driving get a UBD

If I had to have a SATNAV I'd get a Garmin, they seem to be better at zeroing in on targets than others I've seen, howeever this is only from my limited experience of seeing them in action. I don't own one myself.

I've got one of the original TomTom GO's (even before the 300's came out) and love it to bits.

By FAR the best user interface at the time.

Having said that the other competitors have since had plenty of time to catch up, and are now probably on a par with them.

Dobbo you can see more walking from point A to B but it is easier to drive..
I do agree there should be some navigational comptency test before be allowed to drive in the out back,
I'm lucky I was taught and have taught, celestial, map to ground and compass navigation I can even use and have working sextant In the day of technology GPS are great but if the system was removed for civilian use ie time of war when Sats are re directed to certain parts of the globe and the few are left for normal people you would find an amazing amount of people who wouldn't have a clue on how to basically navigate using a map and compass. this I feel is bad for outback travelling especially in place devoid of geographical features like a desert. IMO
Oh I do have a GPS as I'm lazy

I have a NAVMAN PiN 570 with Smart ST 3D mapping software (same as ICN I think).

I love it - but I don't use it too much because I know where I am going most of the time.

Often lend it to the MRS when she sets off to somewhere new - she LOVES it too.

I lent it to a colleague who is house hunting. She reckons its a marriage saver. All the houses they want to inspect all loaded in the night before - too easy.

I have not done it yet but plan to load up Ozi explorer software on a separate SD chip which will allow me to interchange between street and bush navigation.

I have used a GPS hiking in the National parks with friends (yes Yabbie before you say it Fat people can Hike) on more than one occation my mates (admittedly) el cheapo GPS gave us a false reading on the direction of our vehicles. I have never had this problem with a topo map and a compass.

Have a look at this forum, some good stuff here:

    http://www.mtekk.com.au/Forums/tabid...9/Default.aspx

On the strength of the reviews in there I went with the TomTom One, & very happy so far.

The fix with the new GPS receivers is way better than the old 12 channel ones. The TT1 gets a lock quicker every time than my Magellan which has an external aerial. And holds it better.

I just got a Garmin NUVI 300. Fantastic and so small. Haven't used it out of town yet. You will need an external antenna though as the windscreen is near vertical on a Defender. It works well in any other car as it can get a better view of the sky. 20 channels helps.
