Magellan Crossover GPS, around a $1000. I've got one very happy with it. Does turn by turn street nav, marine, and snail trail when out the middle of nowhere. And 8 hours of hand held use aswell.
Can anybody tell me which GPS navigation unit is a good one to buy for cheap $$ OR which ones I should stay away from?
I do not have a budget as yet but want value for money without gadgets etc. Something akin to the Defender it will be going into.
Cheers

Do you want one with inbuilt maps / large screen? Or just a nice simple one that gives you lat / long and plugs into a laptop for use with Oziexplorer?

Apollo, Trimble, Magellan are all good GPS units. My personal opinion you cant go wrong with a Garmin unit. Garmin are industry leaders in Aviation related GPS technology, so this filters down to everyday units for the man / woman on the street.
Your decision needs to be based on what features you want.
e.g do you want a big screen with turn by turn voice call out, or tuff hand held unit which you can quickly remove and carry with you. Will you want to save or plot you own course/ track to your favourite fishing hole?
Do you want a moving map display? etc.
Do a web search of GPS units find the features you want and go to your local supplier and get the sales rep to give you a demo.
First thing to check is how many satellites the unit can track at the same time.
More satellites equals better accuracy and peace of mind in the bush.

Look at the other threads in the GPS section of AULRO for some ideas.
It basically comes down to whether you just want something basic to tell you your location, a city/town street navigator, or a full moving map GPS for bush tracks etc.

Having spent months investigating what to get and more importantly why I need one, I suggest these steps in capability to consider:
1> Basic - Some trip record capability, way points, gray scale screen, internal memory. Basic Garmin etrax are going on Ebay for $80.
2> As above but more internal memory with mini USB to upload/download trip info from your PC (personally I think this has got to be the min spec you'd want).
3> As above, with mapping.
Then there's colour, micro SD cards and then a myriad of features like compass, barometer, etc.
I have the most basic eTrex. I also have a connecting cable to plug into the "cigar" lighter socket (to save battery power) and, simultaneously, connecting to my laptop, allowing moving map display & upload & download of waypoints, tracks etc. (using Oziexplorer & maps that I have scanned in),
Digital maps are becoming more readily available.
I already have a standard GPS unit for fishing holes, tracks etc etc. So what I am after is something that can plan a route for me, give me turn by turn instructions and also just reroutes itself if you go another way because there is a toymoter onfire in the middle of the CBD. If you get what I mean.
