    GPS and Laptop advice

I recently picked up a Tough book with XP on it and I'm getting a GPS USB receiver ::::: Globalsat Technology Corporation :::::

I've used one of these for GPS on the boat before an the old man has the same receiver using oziexplorer and some software from a Russian group

I'm wondering what software and maps combo to use in the Disco for streetmaps and touring ?

The oze explorer maps I've got for aus show major highways and roads but it's lacking in detail.

Get Natmaps Raster DVD version, UBD Australian City Street and UBD Australian Towns and use them in conjunction with Oziexplorer or TrackRanger. All of these maps can be loaded and set up to auto load eg as you come into town limits it will change from the Natmap map to the Town map. I have Trackranger with Natmaps and UBD Australian City Streets and when funds allow plan getting the town maps and Trackranger upgrade, but also need to get a reliable power source for the laptop in the car. You will need to check with Oziexplorer if the maps are compatable with the system but to my knowledge they are. Most electronic maps can be used so if you have or want Hemma maps they can be used as well, but not sure on the auto load with these.

Thanks for that I wasn't even aware of the Trackranger one, it looks a lot nicer than ozi explorer

all I've got to do is figure out where I want to mount the toughbook in the Disco 1 it's got a touch screen so I'd be mounting the whole laptop not just leaving it under a seat and mounting a screen.

I was wondering If it would be possible to mount it to the roof but I have a feeling the weight might be too much other than that it really only leaves the top of the dash or some kind of ram mount along these lines Vehicle Computer Mounting Solutions from Antares Corporation
theres no cost listed on that site which is always a worry

Still if anyone has any other suggestions I'd like to hear them.

I use oziexplorer on my laptop for bush, and sometimes city navigation.
I find it excellent and from the reading of your question I'm confused.

Oziexplorer is only as good as the mapping you supply it.

trackranger seems to do exactly the same things, possibly presented slightly differently and using the same basic maps (same maps can also be used with Ozi.)

If you already have Ozi, just grab some decent mapping and you'll be happy.
