Is it a case of buying site unseen over the net or are there any retail shops that could help me out in the geelong area? also what should i look for? are there many types? and where can i get the software from? proberly goin to use oziexplorer unless there is better software. will be using it purley for 4WD applacations in the pilbra area.

Funny that. Iv'e been exploring this very issue for the last 4 weeks. From what i can see the range of usb GPS receivers is half a dozen of one, or six of the other. I just ordered one of ebay yesterday for 46 plus freight, but given that they are solid state tech, and specs seem to be similar, i can't see to much of a difference here. Certainly would not be paying $80 for one.

The software will be more of an issue. Ozisoft is def the leader. Just found some software that will bring down maps from google and will then convert the selected area to a oziexplorer map file. sweet.

If your laptop has bluetooth I would consider a bluetooth gps. Make sure it had at least a SIRF III chip. Mine is a 20 channel unit and it gets great reception!!

    Lots of sellers on ebay.

Dont want to hijack this thread but...

hey guys, found a link to download software called MVGoogle. It allows you to select any given area of google eart sattelite images or google maps images, and instantly convert them to an Oziexplorer map file.

    http://www.silber2004.narod.ru/GoogleMV1.zip

The page is in russian but just click on the link ending in GoogleMV1.zip and it will down load.

    Extract and start.
Again it will be in russian, go to gear symbol and you can change the language to english.

    1. What zoom? Don't be too greedy as detailed images need a lot of space and download time. 13x gives you quality similar to NASA satellite images. 14x is the best I can get in some parts of WA. 15x is my favourite: reasonable details, but not so big. 16x is very detailed and I wouldn't go any further.

    2. How to do it? My preference is to zoom at size I like and than scroll through the area of interest. Once you got everything, zoom to a smaller number, select the area you looked earlier and zoom you used before. Click Start and in Operating Mode set Internet and Cache. Accept it and image will be created within seconds. Selecting Cache & Internet will take longer but if you don't, some of the map may not already be in the cache. Obviously the larger the area you select to use as a map, the longer it will take to build it from the net. So, go small. If you select to create .map file, you can use it in Oziexplorer immediately. Cache stays on your computer and you can use it later to build on it.

Your link works, but the link within that page to the .zip file now gives a 403 error.
