Oh yeah, if your stereo is as ancient as mine and only has a cassette player, those aux to tape converters work :-) (until my stereo died of course)

Aaaaawww bugger !! .... No FM transmitter on the XL488 !! CRAP! %#@*^/$@%

SWMBO wanted me to install a CD stacker in the D2a as the standard single CD/Radio player (factory, no cassette player) doesn't play MP3's ... but there's a DVD player under the drivers seat (factory), and being it's a 7 seater with rear aircon', I'm already struggling for permanent storage space as I don't have the rear bins... and I didn't want to loose the last available storage space (albiet small) under the front passengers seat by putting a stacker there ... so a GPS with FM to the stereo seems like a logical 2 birds with one GPS stone solution ... without having to shell out for a new stereo with aux/usb capability AND a GPS as well ... SWMBO is more interested in the stereo ... I want the GPS ... the bloody goal posts just moved again!

So, maybe an S200 Navman and Miohack it ... or the Garmin Nuvi 765 is looking like a better allround solution.

Thanks Mark! (btw, I grew up as a kid in Annangrove 40+yrs ago ... I gues it's changed a bit in them parts since then?)

    Hi
I have a Garmin 760 and have the Garmin Topo Australia on sd card seems to work well were ever we have used it so far all tho it does show some tracks in our local NP as there but have been overgrown for years or can not be found the garmin cost about $400 and the Topo around $120 on ebay have seen a few places on the net that yuo can download them. The garmin 765 i think has more internal memory than the 760 so you might be able to copy the map to its internal memory.
    Regards
    Doug

Thanks everyone for your info & advice ... SWMBO can go without the additional audio entertainment for a while ... (ducking!)

Thanks to a very kind AULRO member, I'm now the owner of an XL488, boxed with all accessories, 4GB SD card loaded with OziCE + maps ... for $200.

Still getting to grips with mapping, and I'll have to buy Ozi for the PC (have the trial/shareware) , but it's a fantastic bit of gear and I'd definitley recommend it. Does exactly what I wanted ... so much so we're going to buy another!

Found for $249 new, or $337 with reversing camera kit ... going for the $337 option for the D2a and I'll put the one I have now in the work truck.

... and Nokia BL-4C mobile phone batteries are cheap ! Found some 950mAh ones that will fit (I hope) in place of the std 850mAh ones ...

    Thanks again everyone!

Please let me know how it is the reverse camera. I have the GPS XL488 and need to get a reverse camera for the Defe.
My only complain with the 488 is that the map version is old and to update it cost $150
Why they sold it with the old version

    Chucaro,

the reversing camera on them works fine but isn't as user friendly out of the box. What I mean by that is it is a simple plug and play setup. You want it on (rather than the GPS you have to plug it in), you want the GPS (and not the cam you unplug it).

But it only takes a little work to get it going really well.

I have used a scotch lock to split the wire going to the camera (near the camera) and then scotch this split wire to scotch into the reversing light wire.
I did the same with the ignition wire and sent the scotched wire to a switch mounted on the dash. This now gives two features. When dash board switch is on the only time the gps is converted to cam is when in reverse and when off it displays only cam.
For me I only use the off switch when I want to check out the coupling and the camper trailer when moving, otherwise it is always in the on position.

    Cheers Stace

    Very much ! Thank you.

I've now got OziCE (updated to version 2.31) loaded into the Nandflash memory of the XL488, instead of being on the SD card ... it loads and runs much faster, and map indexing flies now I got some extra 4GB SD cards and now have just maps only on 2x cards ... and a card for MP3's.

    Works well !

I haven't installed mine yet but I've hooked it up temp, and it works well.
The camera's power wires go to your reversing light at the rear, and the signal cable goes forward to your GPS or it's cradle ... when selecting reverse, the camera powers up, the GPS recognises a signal at its input from the camera, and switches to reverse camera mode ... and switches back to GPS when you shift out of reverse.

Stace has gone one step further and put a manual on/off power switch to the camera as well so it can be turned on at will when not in reverse ... nifty idea!

The 2009 map updates are available online now for ordering, and are $125 + $13.20 registered post ... supplied on a 1GB SD Card ... I'm assuming they can be copied into the XL488's internal memory ...
